A day or so ago, my total channels on my Roku4, was over 350, today its 275, so I had 75 uncertified channels that went away, none were porn by the way.  The way they went about this is total **bleep**.

Roku 4? You do go back a ways!

I'm not happy with the way it all went down, but they did give us a heads up months ago about this. 120 days (exactly) ahead of the removal, in fact. And 120 days is how long beta apps can operate, so at least Roku was consistent about that. Now if the developers will update their apps and submit them ...

@althe1

An app developer would have to code to standard and submit for certification, being sure to set the Content Rating as Adult. I suspect the adult content app you were using has yet to do that.

Whoever you paid should be able to offer instructions on where you can watch, including platforms and how to add to that platform. If it's not in the Roku Channel Store, then unless you're part of a beta test group (less than two dozen slots per app), you won't be able to add it on Roku.

It's not standard to have to pay to be part of a test group, so it's doubtful you'll get a beta test app code.

Will Roku show Pornhub if they go through the certification process?

That's the trick.

Getting rid of private channels is how they enacted the porn ban saying there is no porn ban because of the way they choose to ban porn is not a serious argument.

The reality is if they explicitly banned porn the situation would be exactly the same as it is right now.

I don't care about what you think...

Roku can stick it....  They have just to put back some porn channel back and everyone will be happy...   I know that won't happen any time soon so, there are better options out there. Now, Roku just became mediocre and boring provider.

Hmm, maybe time to look at another solution. Disappointing.

How do you reconcile these linked outcomes of the change to no longer support non certified channel apps:

* pornhub (a porn app)

* vidangel (an app that censors content in real time to make it "family friendly", for a streaming platform that is notoriously not interested in being family friendly)

* various IPTV apps that distribute content in ways that bypass content owners rights to control and get paid for their content.

The link here: none of these would pay their commercial dues to Roku, non certified channels didn't have to pay, certified channels do.  That was also the heart of the Roku/YouTubeTV dispute that was eventually resolved commercially).

Reputational damage through enabling unlawful activity (content and copyright) also an issue.

Could Roku make a platform and a deal that would allow Pornhub/Vidangel to be on the platform in some form that is legally and reputationslly operable?  Yes they could, and Roku might be better for it (finally implementing the content controls that many users have been asking for).

Roku has made a commercial decision. Big business as usual. Won't change.

People complaining repeatedly here are exhibiting something called a psychological "racket" (look that up) that is preventing them moving towards closure on the situation (and @DBDukes is also "racketing" in his defense of Roku, and maybe should consider letting that go as many people won't accept that argument).

If you want to stop using Roku, go right ahead. Donate or sell you device, don't create more e-waste by throwing it away, or at least dispose responsibly.

The rest of us are more or less content, let's move towards mutually getting the best of the platform and complaining about issues like battery drain, premature WiFi failure, underpowered devices that don't do 5ghz wifi, limited hardwired network support, poor accessory availability outside North America, etc.
