3rd Faulty SoundBridge Radio

Postby WokYouOz » Fri Feb 08, 2008 4:06 am

I too have had three soundbridge radios fail, all with the same fault (no lights no sound). To reduce the expense and time in getting the unit replaced by Roku (I assume they are not fixing the root cause) I plan to repair the unit.

Does anyone have circuit diagrams for the power supply.

Any help appreciated.

dead soundbridge

Postby gram » Sun Feb 10, 2008 3:29 am

I have managed to repair mine - need capacitor and new rectifying diode for 6.5 v circuit on power supply. Parts a few $ only.

Happy to send pictures of how to do it. It is a bit fiddly especially reassembling.

Hi,

what type of rectifying diode is there placed?

Gram, please post a "How to" in this thread with photos and the details of how you took it apart, what you've done and what you've replaced - I'm sure a great many users, myself included, would be really interested to see what's involved....

Perhaps try Pyramid...

Postby Burkhardi » Mon Feb 11, 2008 8:24 am

For what it’s worth, Pyramid-Audio may be an option for people who are not the DYI (Do It Yourself) type people or don’t have the spare time. I am willing to bet they would take an overhaul approach and replace all the electrolytic caps for cheap insurance.

Just happened third time for me...

Postby Tomas » Sat Mar 01, 2008 3:55 am

I won a R1000 in the Turkey Shoot contest 2005. I received the radio in June 2006 (!) and it lasted four months before it went dead. It took me a month to get a warranty replacement from Roku and that one lasted six months before it died. Next warranty replacement died yesterday after seven months of usage. It seems like quality has improved... (4 months -> 6 months -> 7 months) :-)

I sent in a mail today stating the facts to Roku, we'll see what they do. I guess that warranty does not apply anymore :-(

I ordered my R1000 in the fall of 2005, but did not receive it until late February, 2006. My unit died recently. Roku is offering to replace it for $199.00. I'm concerned that the same thing will happen every two years or if they feel that they have rectified the matter. I am torn because I really liked my radio.

Your in luck, all the new R1000's and replacments have been updated.

http://forums.rokulabs.com/viewtopic.php?t=16190

I'd have to check to find the exact state this was put in place, but there is now a solution in place that addresses a source of power related failures. This fix is applied to all new and replacement radios.

If you purchase a new radio from roku.com right now, or if your radio is replaced now, or has been replaced in the last couple months, your unit has the fix applied.

Hi Pete i dont belive it is the 220uf 35v cap that fails i think it is the 45uF 16v in the oscillator, i have replaced all but this one the oscillator still does not start, i should have this one in the next couple of days.
All diodes seem to be intact, i dont think it you need to change the smoothing caps, as their value is not important, the reason the PSU fails is because the caps go out of spec this stops the oscillator starting early warning is the radio takes a second press to turn on then one day it wont turn on at all.

I will let you know when i replace the last cap.
Oh some one asked for a list of the caps
1x 100uF 35v
2x 220uF 35v
1x 45uF 16v
2x 2200 35v
100uF 400v

Hi Bogget.

Thanks for the info that's interesting. I have not actually had to service any of my units yet, hence wanting a list of caps used. 45uF that's rather an odd value, wonder why a 47uF wasn't used ?

Thanks for the list of caps. I would be interested to know what fixes yours.

Is there not an SMPS chip used in the design usually I might expect to find something like a UC3842 or similar.

I think the worst job is dismantling \ Reassembly.

Did you not find a burned up diode on the 6.5V rail ?

Typo it is 47uF , no the diode is fine, my PSU is very badly covred in a vibration resisting gue very difficult to see the components.

I will be trying the new caps tonight as they arrived this afternoon.

OK story so far, changed every cap now, still no oscillation, so now looking at diodes, they test ok but could have gone soft i suppose.
I wish i could read the components on my board if anyone has a board out they can read i could do with some component values i cant read on mine, the diodes would be a good start.

If we can do this i will put a kit together to repair the units.

Hi Bogget.

I would think the problem with your unit may well be failure of a startup resistor.

Most SMPS have a highish value resistor straight from the reservoir cap (100uf 400v) to the osc, this is used for startup only, once the thing is running the supply to maintain the osc is then provided by a winding on the transformer and diode etc back to the same point as the startup resistor.

Worth checking all resistors around the primary, particularly those of a highish value. Presumably you have 350 ish volts dc across the reservoir cap ?
