Google Music?

Postby jeffrok » Mon Nov 21, 2011 3:03 pm

I just uploaded a bunch of music to the "cloud" (trendy catchwords, gotta love em).. And was wondering if anyone would be able to create Google Music channel, for users to stream their uploaded music.. I'd pay a couple-$3 for it, <Force equals mass times acceleration> right I would!
Yeah, I got some Rokus.

I saw a tweet reply the other day that said Roku had no plans as of yet to create a google music channel, and with all the back and forth over youtube I doubt if google would let a private channel fly... But I would be up for google music or better yet amazon's cloud player, I suspect we will be waiting a while for either though...

That looks like Spotify, not Google Music.

It would be a nice channel. Note that Google has not released an API for google music, so it would be very difficult for a 3rd party to develop a channel for Google Music. Google themselves would have to develop it.

It works for any (and all) audio that can be output from a pc. So Google Music, Amazon, Spotify, Rhapsody, etc. can all make it to the Roku via a computer on the local network.

Oh, but does it let you select tracks from the screen, or is it just an audio pass-through?

I'm really hoping for a Google Music experience, where you can select tracks and create playlists directly from the Roku.

Unless and until Google can release either their own channel or an API (and they may be blocked from doing so by the music industry) this is probably the best you'll get. Someone could write a screen-scraper to parse the music library webpage, but:
A) That's a lot of work, and it's unlikely you can create a business plan around the idea, so it would have to be a labor of love.
B) Screen scrapers tend to be quite brittle and can break with any change to the website.
C) Google would most likely consider it unauthorized use and demand that Roku block distribution of the channel (as in the case of Youtube).

Mp3tunes (which is already in the channel store, btw) provides an api that developers can use to interface the mp3tunes library to new platforms. Google, Amazon and Apple do not.

Thanks for clearing it up.. Well, I guess I can hope that Google releases either an official channel, or API for it, so it can be developed on the Roku.

The new service works great for me, by the way.. Streaming for whole collection of MP3s to my phone is awesome.

I've looked into doing this recently. By sniffing around while I'm navigating my account, I'm quick to notice most of the stuff going on is HTTPS (SSL), so a sniffer doesn't log most of what is going on in plain text you'd understand.... But! I am able to see the playback URL for the actual song you select, because that's an HTTP request which shows up fine in a packet sniffer.

Example:

http://t.doc-0-0-sj.sj.googleuserconten ... 6B&key=sj2

That URL is basically going to request your given music file and deliver it to the browser via headers calling itself "music.mp3", which expires in about a couple minutes.

(No that URL above won't play, I changed some info just in case anything account-specific happens if one of you clicked it... so you'll get an malformed request error.) :)

But if anyone can figure out how to implement the request mechanism, digest an XML (or whatever) playlist of the complete Google Music library for your account.... and then wrap a navigation interface around it for Roku... MMmmm... Wouldn't that be nice! Too bad it's HTTPS. That likely requires a bit more firepower to decipher.

Sorry if this is too greek for the general discussion area!

Glad to see this is at least being explored. Having had the change to play with Google Music for many months now, going back to when it was in closed beta, I have to say I'm "hooked," and honestly, I was a skeptic at first.

Having my music stream to wherever I am, on any device, is a game-changer for me.

As long as the place that I am is not my living room, and the device is not my stereo :)

Getting GM to stream through Roku is truly "the missing link."

Roku only plays MP3 non-DRM music files, so unless you re-encode everything that is not MP3 before upping to the cloud, that's another dealbreaker

Seeing as how Google has Google TV, I doubt they're going to do anything to help get GM working on a competitor's device :(.

Seeing how there's an unauthorized client for the iPhone, I think this must be possible. I've got a few tools I use at times... I'll see what I can dig up.

"Nowhere Music" app for Roku allows Google Music streaming of the first 5000 song. I just tried it and it works great. The UI and search capabilities may need some work, but I'm pretty satisfied so far. Kudos too "nowhere man". You can get the app at https://owner.roku.com/Add/nowheremusic.

Happy streaming
