Is there a SIMPLE way to view my photos???

Postby doogster » Sat Dec 11, 2010 7:15 am

I've looked at the threads (some 80+ pages)... I have tried loading software.... I can't seem to make this happen...

I have an NAS drive with photos on it... I simply want to be able to view these photos through my Roku box on my TV.

Is there a SIMPLE way to do this? Because I just spent 3 hours trying to load Apache web server software on my NAS drive... I tried using Roksbox software and it only wanted to view .xml files - which I don't have...

Do you have either an XR or XDS box with the USB port? If so you could try Nowhereman's USB Media Browser.
I don't know if it works with a NAS though.

I have an XR unit in the house along with two other XD's.... I see the XR DOES have a USB jack... I could try that...

Also, I see now on the Roku home page they say the XDS will have photo viewing capabilities in Dec 2010...

If your tv has a VGA input you can always try a simple VGA+AUDIO cable from the pc to the tv...

It works great for me; $15 bucks online for a 50' VGA + audio cable was the answer...

The USB channel in the link above is the basically the beta for that channel. Nowhereman is RokuChris, a Roku employee.

I use the Picasa channel. I upload my pics to my Picasa account and there they are. Not exactly a quick solution, but easy AND it's like backing up your pics.

Q: How does Chaneru differ from say Playon?

Roksbox does not require XML files. I happen to use the
XML files because that was an initial requirement. That
requirement was lifted months ago. Just blank out the
XML file names in Roksbox configuration, it will then
use directory structure. Just tested this and it works
fine.

Please note that testing your photos, (or MP3s), with a
computer's web browser pointed at your NAS is a nice
feature. In my case I had a web server already running
on my local network. So adding Roksbox was trivial.

I use iPhoto, Picasa and Dropbox for sharing. When you start up Chaneru, it detects iPhoto and Dropbox and sets them up automatically. Then you can go into the server and create a path for Picasa or any other media you have. Then you can browse all your photo albums or events, play music and videos from your TV and Roku.

does picasa store the original quality of the pics or does it size it down?

also, is there a maximum amount of space you get?

You have a choice full res or smaller, but you have to be careful to select the full res option in the dialogs that pop up.

I think there's a 1 or 2 gig limit for free. For $5 they'll sell you 20 gig of space for a year.

You need to install Picasa on your PC, download free from Google, as it's the best way to deal with their online albums IMHO. I just started using them.

One cool thing is you can SYNC the albums to your PC(s) such that any updates made through the Picasa editor on any one PC are picked up by all the others. Good for keeping picture screensavers in sync across machines, etc.

What if you'd like to view photos by others, say from a photo-heavy blog? I have tried entering the blog rss feed using Sunimi and Mediafly to create a way to view blog photos with no success. It seems that most apps either will broadcast video or audio; I just want something to view opj (other people's jpgs). No, not porn, I just want some cool eye candy of graphic design, home decor, crafty stuff, etc.

I'm disappointed that the Flickr channel does not have an option to view favorites. Is there a way to hack it to do so? I noticed some Flickr apps on their website developed by others; if you've used them, are they reliable or safe?
