More live news feeds needed!

Postby sensel » Sun Mar 13, 2011 9:19 am

The only live news feed on Roku seems to be Al Jazeera.

However, there is a live news feed of CNN International on justin.tv one can watch on a computer. Also, ustream has a number of channels on it that are news related. Including a live NHK World live feed in English.

Why can't we have at least ONE decent and hopefully somewhat impartial* 24 hour news channel on the Roku?

Roku, please cut a deal with CNN International or BBC or Sky News to carry a live news feed in English!

(*IMHO there is no impartial news anymore but the BBC or CNN International seem to come closest.)

Both the BBC Live and CNN International live feeds are available in NowhereTV.

Besides all the live channels that are in Nowheretv, there are also standalone channels for AlJazeera, RT America, RT English, CNN International, and BBC....

You should look at the private channel database http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/RokuDigitalVideoPlayer/

Thats currently the best way to access live news feeds. Add the private channel Justin Tv. Go through their menu click on news and favorite the cnn live feed the msnbc live feed. There is none for Fox news except a couple of streamers who stream other stuff have it on Fox news a good amount of their stream time.

those are not codecs or containers Roku can handle.

That's not HLS. I don't know much about WebM, but it must have its own non-hls live streaming mechanism.

i know they are not. I was talking about someone setting up a transcode of the feed. when I get around to it I will have VLC do it. wether or not it will be a public feed depends.

With all due respect, you asked if someone could put together a channel for it and that would require it to be in the proper format. A transcode would, as you know, require intervention by a computer to then stream. That's not really creating a channel for "Skynews" that's creating a transcoding channel, which there are already a few. At the very least that's creating a plugin for one of the channels to handle that container/codec

No, it isn't. Webm was introduced May 19, 2010. Less than 12 months ago. Roku was introduced in 2008, with its most recent box introduced in Sept. 2010. Roku decodes video via dedicated, specialized hardware; new codecs can't be introduced via software, as the general purpose CPU and ram are inadequate for the task. The first hardware chip capable of decoding 1080p webm wasn't introduced until January 2011. Maybe someday.

There currently isn't a single hardware decoder for WebM. It's another failed Google concept.
