Using hotspot for internet connection

Postby DAS » Wed Dec 14, 2011 3:40 pm

I may need more help than you can provide here, but I will ask anyway.

I have the ROKU LT.
My TV is a VIZIO HDTV VL370M with 1080p
My internet is via a hotspot connection from the apartment complex (sign in with a user name and password).
I have an HP Pavillion laptop and also a Toshiba Satellite laptop

I have read on this forum that you could hook up a wireless router to your laptop so the ROKU could connect thru that device.

I have a netgear N300 Wireless Router

I have no idea where to go from here. How to connect the router to the laptop, etc. so ROKU can see it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

you can either buy and use a travel router, or set up internet connection sharing with your laptop or pc. The Roku can't do the sign-in/authentication with the hotspot in order to gain access to the net. Here's an example of access point client mode (the bottom one)...

So are you saying the Netgear N300 Wireless Router I have won't work for this?

You can plug your existing router into the laptop or computer that is already getting an internet connection and set it up as an access point where it then broadcasts the shared internet connection over wireless. Problem is with that the computer its plugged into has to always be on to operate the Roku. Add to that the Roku is an "always connected" device it complicates things. If you have an ethernet jack in the house you can get the net through you could plug the router into that and set it as an access point too..

How do you set up the router as an access point?
