HBO Go without a cable box

Postby dbunch » Sun Jan 15, 2012 2:49 am

Okay, so Roku is supposed to be all about cutting the cable..

I have basic standard cable with Time Warner. No box...

I want HBO Go, but they want me to upgrade to the next service and pay for a box...

Is there anyway around this...

I don't care if I don't get all those HBO channels.. I just want HBO Go on my Roku

HBO should just lease there stuff to netflix.

HBO doesn't want your money. We've been waiting for them to open it up but they seem to old fashioned to realize it.

Who said this?

Some people use both.

Then again I never had a cable to cut to begin with. :P

Plus HBO has no plans to offer it without cable or satellite. (Until a crap load of people quit HBO that is....)

Agreed with the above, people need to quit HBO. They have some good programing but once you dig deeply into Netflix and Hulu you won't miss it. There's so much to watch I can live without them.

Not according to their Terms of Use. They consider HBOGo to be an add-on to their existing service, not as an alternative way to get their service.

Their philosophy is, you're away from your existing HBO subscription (on the road, etc) and want a way to see HBO content to which you've subscribed.

I feel your pain. Wife loves "True Blood" but goes over to daughter's house to watch it, since we don't have cable (and, therefore, no HBO). We'd gladly pay for HBO standalone service sans cable/satellite ... if they offered it. They don't, and they don't get money from us as a result.

You can't watch HBO Go on Roku if you have Time Warner anyway, even if you're subscribed to HBO. Time Warner doesn't support Roku for that service. Thanks, Time Warner! :(

Use your daughter's account for HBO Go, they won't know.

i'm not sure HBO is viable as stand alone. I've been thinking about it and how much would you pay for it? They have some original content, but not much in terms of viewing hours. Perhaps tying it to the cable channel is the only way to justify their existence?

Back in the days of TVRO (big dish satellite ) we had to take HBO to court so that we could get a fair deal on that platform. It took two years in court and a special hearing before congress because cable wanted a monopoly of huge $$ profits for their content if one was not on the cable.I imagine that streaming will face those huge obstacles too.
