Picture/sound cutting out in 1080p

Postby dpercio1 » Sun Jan 15, 2012 9:17 am

I recently purchased my first Roku 2 XS and for the most part, have been extremely happy. One thing that is driving me crazy is the issue I've been having when using Roku in 1080p-mode. The video looks great, but about every 3-5 minutes, the picture and sound both cut out for about 1 second and then comes right back. It's definitely not a bandwidth problem as this happens even on the menu page as well as when playing Angry Birds. When I change the device to 720p, everything is fine- it NEVER cuts out.

I know it's not the HDMI cable because I already swapped it out with another cable. It's not the TV because the picture is fine when I connected my cable box (or Blu-ray) using the same cable on the same HDMI port. I have done both soft and hard resets, but the problem persists. At this point, I keep the setting at 720p and it's fine, but I would like to get this resolved once and for all. Anyone have any ideas about this? Is this just a defective Roku?

Thanks...

Are you connecting the roku directly to your TV? If so, kindly post the model number of your TV and somebody here may just provide you the information you're looking for. :wink:

Does it happen if your Roku is connected directly to your television?

11- Info:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tip: list the Make/Model of All connected devices (Roku/TV/STB's/Bluray/ Modem/Router/etc.) - Connections type (HDMI/Digital/Analog/ethernet/WiFi), - Channels name (Netflix/Amazon/etc.) - Streaming titles name (HD/SD/Stereo/ 5.1DD/DD+) – Roku’s Firmware version# - post as much more info as possible!

The info makes it easier for people here on these boards to assist!

All connections are HDMI.

Roku as I already said is connected to a Yamaha RX-A2000.

The RX-A2000 is a nice AVR!!

I assume your connection ---> Roku >HDMI > AVR > HDMI >TV (or Projector)

What is the Roku model? Firmware version#? TV (or Projector) make & model?

Is the issue accrue (at random) w/1080p and not 720p - at Roku's Home screen or while streaming an HD title from Netflix or Amazon – does the audio cut off as well or video only issue? ….

Indeed it is, I love the way it sounds.

I assume your connection ---> Roku >HDMI > AVR > HDMI >TV (or Projector)

Yes, but sound does not come from TV but rather from speakers attached to the AVR.

What is the Roku model? Firmware version#? TV (or Projector) make & model?

Roku XS, firmware 4.2 build 1006. TV is a Panasonic TC-P58V10

Is the issue accrue (at random) w/1080p and not 720p - at Roku's Home screen or while streaming an HD title from Netflix or Amazon – does the audio cut off as well or video only issue? ….

at random audio cuts out for around 1 sec. I saw this issue when using Plex beta version. I have only seen this happen when Roku is set to 1080p I have not seen it happen when set to 720p.

Last night I watched two shows from HBO GO and neither show had any dropouts when running at 1080p.

See below, is it a bug in the Roku firmware?

From : http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/top ... -cuts-out/

5.1 support is pretty new, but I bet scyber can chime in when he has a chance. However, I will say that there is a bug with the Roku 2 firmare right now. It appears to skip the occasional segment in an HLS stream (which is what things are transcoded to for the Roku). I'm wondering if this issue is triggered when a dropped segment occurs, perhaps? Just tossing ideas out there, I don't have a 5.1 setup I can test with.

from OP at plexapp.com forum
….Netflix won't output any audio when 5.1 is turned on….!!!!!!

from other poster
….it might be a dropped frame instead of a segment…!!!

I wouldn’t yet call it a bug based on the above users comments!

- Netflix 5.1DD+ & Amazon 5.1DD audio have no cut-off - your AVR is certainly capable of both, you may try it.
- Your issue w/Plex may due to been a beta version!

Anyway, if 720p works fine, You could to set Roku to 1080p, set Yamaha Video Processing to OFF if it was set to ON.

From on screen Menu > Setup > Video >Processing >OFF & try it again.

See Tips link ---> # 5 AV receivers: Video
