"Google Play"

Postby buenafe » Tue Mar 06, 2012 6:16 pm

As a Roku fan, I wonder how this http://play.google.com/about/
will find its way to Roku devices. Currently made for Android.

It just updated on my Logitech Revue. I don't see it coming to Roku any time soon but I could be wrong. I haven't played with it yet so I don't know what it does. Looks like it may be interesting.

Is that where you rent movies from? I was doing online price comparisons and it kept saying that renting from the droid market was a dollar cheaper than amazon. I have a revue but was unsure how to rent on it.

It appears to link everything together: movies, books, music, etc. I still have some research to do.

Precisely, it turns the Market into more than just an App Store, it is now Apps, Music, Movies and Books.

It's basically a rename of the Android Market to Google Play Store.. Nothing more. The movies and music have been around for awhile now.
Yeah, I got some Rokus.

This page says the Play Movies app is incompatible with the Revue :( :

On the other hand, you may be able to just browse to youtube.com/movies and purchase and playback from the Revue browser.

Sadly enough as far as I can tell the Revue is only compatible with Amazon SD movies. Youtube can play HD but does not rent via the app nor the browser to Google TV devices. It's only free and ad supported Youtube.

Isn't it strange that Google will not sell movies to a Google device yet are jumping through hoops (both with Play and Youtube) to get them on Macs and Windows?

Only until you count up the number of GoogleTV devices and then count the number of Macs and Windows PCs :). I'm hopefully that when(if) the new GTV hardware comes out, they'll start supporting their 'Play' content on it...it would look really bad if the second-generation GTV stuff is also locked out of their own content store.

I don't let them off the hook so easy. It's just lazy and short sighted. A million or so devices is nothing to sneeze at. Then consider they they wrote the code and made it Honeycomb compliant. The Revue has few differences other than forcing landscape mode. Heck, Amazon is more interested in it then they are. That's why Amazon is so big and Google is resting on it's search engine.

Many apps that they "say" won't work just haven't been turned on for the Revue. I know because I use many of those apps daily. I even get update notices about them but can't update them directly through the store. If I got the Play app (can't be bothered) I bet it would work fine.
