ROKU 2 HD crashes streaming HD-720 video from Roksbox

Postby kirkwolf » Sat Oct 20, 2012 10:15 am

Hi,

I have a ROKU 2 HD. Its currently on G wifi and works great with Netflix, Amazon, etc etc.

I recently setup roksbox and tried streaming some x264 videos.

- a mp4 "SD" recording works fine, but the quality is not "great"

- a mkv "HD" 720P x264 recording will play for 3-4 seconds fine and then the ROKU box crashes and eventually reboots.

I assume that the problem is that the video has too high a bit rate? or do I need a hard wired connection?
See below for a dump of what "mediainfo" says about the file.

So, I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction - I've looked all over and there doesn't seem to be a clear answer to this question:

If I want to play torrent or usenet videos, but the HD-720p versions don't seem to work (too high a bit rate, or maybe mkv when it is better to have mp4?)
What (linux) tool can I use to reencode and how? ( I have ffmpeg, x264, etc).

I tried using ffmpeg to reencode using ROKU sdk site suggested parameters, but the file size (and bit rate) didn't seem to go down... it actually went up a little.
(See: http://sdkdocs.roku.com/display/RokuSDK ... ndBitrates "Good Encoding parameters for H.264 video and aac audio"))

Thanks for any suggestions...
Kirk

It looks to me like your video might be AVC, but in the header it looks like it is listed as x.264 but I am no expert at these.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC

Apparently roksbox is quite limited in the codes and bit rates that it supports. It also doesn't do well at documenting how one would transcode an existing h.264 / mp4 to a lower bit rate. Isn't anyone doing this? Or using something different instead of roksbox?

This is not a limitation of Roksbox. The Roku Player is deliberately lean in supported codecs and bitrates.

OK. But what Linux command line tools are available to reencode H.264 MP4/MPV video like above so that the frame rate is <= 2.5 Mbps ?

Surely this is a common problem, no?

Handbrake will do the video, but won't maintain the HD ratio. If you must keep the video in HD then I would have to say that, No, it hasn't been a common problem in these parts, but there is probably a tool that will do what you need.

I'm having this problem with my Roku2 XS, and it's really quite annoying. The crashes are random - that is, sometimes the video will play for 10 minutes or more and then start to stutter and stall, ultimately crashing the Roku entirely; sometimes it manages no more than 10 seconds and crashes back to the roksbox control screen. There also appears to be a problem that's related to resuming play rather than playing from the beginning; resuming play almost always crashes back to the roksbox control after 10-15 seconds.

The video claims to be

File Types: Mkv
Video Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part10)(avc1)
Language: English
Resolution: 1276x720
Frame Rate: 23.976215
Audio Codec: A52 Audio (aka AC3)(a52)
Chanels: 3F2R/LFE
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
Bitrate: 384 kb/s

Help? When it's playing, it's beautiful; the codec can clearly handle the format.

Oh, and the remote control becomes quite unresponsive when the stuttering starts, if that's any clue.

There's a known issue with high bitrate files.

Shawn - what's "high" in this case, and can we expect a fix any time soon?

Or do I have to transcode away all my HD bits?

This hasn't been happening to me with other files that are "HD" (x264), though those are mp4 instead of mkv ...

Thanks,
chris

I won't put words into Shawn's mouth but, generally, when they say something is a known issue, there's a fix in the works.
