Can't connect to Internet (error code 009)

Postby dsjlaw » Sat Dec 29, 2012 1:39 pm

Let me preface this by saying I'm a wireless newb, and know next to nothing about how wireless networks function, so I apologize if I omit any material information.

A few days ago, I received a Roku 2 XD for Christmas. Despite a fair amount of tinkering based on research conducted online regarding how to fix this problem, I've been unable to get my roku box to connect to the Internet (error code 009). Based on my online research, I added static DNSs from Google and OpenDNS to my router settings (router is a linksys WRT54G2v1.5), but that didn't fix the problem. I also tried calling Roku's support and found the representative I spoke to unhelpful. At this point, I'm lost.

I'm fairly sure this problem is fixable, as prior to my Roku difficulties I've never had any problems whatsoever with my Internet and/or router. Please help if you can. Otherwise, I will have to ask my Dad to return the roku, which will make me quite sad.

Thanks, and please let me know if I can provide any more information that will help solve the problem. However, please ask me for the info in terms a wireless noob can understand.

Has your router been flashed with the latest firmware?

Try this:

Restart every thing. Power off your route, cable modem and Roku for 30 secs and turn them back on.

Also remember to type the password correctly as it is cap sensitive. You could also try turning off the wifi password and try connecting. Maybe you just type the password wrong. I've done that and it took me a long time to figure it out. I just assume I enter correctly.

Hope this can help

Regretfully, I don't understand the question (my fault, not yours), so I am guessing the answer is no. :D

Static DNSs (google, opendns), permutations of powering off; nothing w/ MAC addresses tho if it would be helpful I can tell you the IP and MAC shown on my Roku "About" page

Thanks, Josh - pretty sure the password is correct as the first two dots show up green (i.e., connect to wireless, connect to local network)

FWIW, I put in a dummy password for control purposes and the first light (wireless network) came up green while the second (local network) failed, so it must not be a password problem.

Also, my security is "WEP password" (again, don't know what this means) - problematic?

I believe he wants to know if your router is using the latest firmware. If you sign in to your router's setup page, it should be on the top right, just above the model number. According to the [urlhttp://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/WRT54G2]Cisco site[/url], the latest should be Ver.1.5.02 (Build 5) released last 03/19/2012.

Just to double-check, did you enter the GoogleDNS/OpenDNS in the "Static DNS 1" field on in the "2&3" field?

From a different thread:

Aha, maybe this is the problem -- my firmware appears to be out of date: 1.5.01 build 008, Aug 27 2009

Unfortunately, I have no idea how to update it. Help?

Updated my firmware to a Feb 2012 update, but it didn't help fix the problem. I called my router support, and they were also unhelpful, then tried to talk me into buying a $100 service package.

Lost at this point, and now having the same problem with my also brand new kindle.

:(

In other news, I know my roku box works because for two glorious minutes I was able to enjoy its services via an unsecured network with very low signal strength.

Hi,

you know how to set up mac address filters? under wireless > wireless mac filter enter the wirless mac address from the roku info screen or off the bottom of the unit ,put it in your mac list click enable and permit then save settings and check the roku connection -- word of caution if your computer is wireless and instead of permit it says "permit only" be sure and add your computers mac also lest you are locked out -- if this works you must then enter the macs of all your wireless devices or they will not be able to log on

as for the router I am a huge linksys fan-boy and from looking at your set up it should have jumped up and ran with no problem (even with the old firmware) so be sure and check any filters that may already be in place that may be blocking you

good luck and let us know how it goes :)
