Picture Quality on Video Out?

Postby jimisham » Fri Mar 08, 2013 9:12 am

I'm interested in knowing what the picture quality is on Video Output on the Roku?
I need Closed Captioning for Netflix from Uverse. My non Wi-Fi Panasonic has a very good picture on Video Output, even though I realize it's not HD.
I tried a Wi-Fi Sony DVD player and the picture was washed out.
Thanks.

Not sure what you mean. Roku is not a DVD player. It's an internet streaming device.
It outputs up to 1080p HD, depending on the model. The Netflix channel on Roku provides closed captioning on many, but not all movies and shows.

Looks to be about 85% of titles--you can see them here.

Thanks for the replies. I realize it's strictly streaming.
Looking at these on Amazon, it looks like the HD, LT and XD have A/V jacks that will plug into my Samsung TV.
HDMI will not pass Closed Captioning to be deciphered in the TV. But A/V does. But I'm wondering about the quality of the picture. The Sony Wi-Fi had a washed out picture using the A/V jacks. My old non Wi-Fi Panasonic has a very good picture using the A/V jacks.

The netflix channel on roku has CC and will play over HDMI at the best HD quality. It's not de-coded by your TV.

OK. Thanks. I'll check that out. My Directv DVR, rather than the TV, decodes the CC and it works real good.

All you need to do with a Roku is connect it directly to the internet and plug it directly into your TV.

Just checked the Roku website and it looks like the 2, 3 HD and LT will work.
I really appreciate the help.

Yes, any of the current models will work. It's just a matter of what extra features you want.
Just note that the Roku3 is HDMI only, it that matters.

Just to be clear, no channels offer true closed captioning. Some channels/videos offer subtitles, but no channel imbeds closed captions that could be decoded by an external device and I don't even know if that's possible. People love to confuse closed captions and subtitles, but they're not the same thing. Basically, if a video offers subtitles they will be overlaid on the video by the box or "burned" into the video at the source.
