Broken remote control - design flaw?

Postby complex » Thu Feb 28, 2008 8:00 pm

My remote control for my M500 recently died. When I shook the remote around I heard a loose bit inside.

I opened it up and found a tiny black chip. Also found what appears to be a broken ceramic capacitor labeled "104".

Also note the abrasions on the back side of the battery case. It appears that there is very little clearance between the capacitor and the case, so normal handling of the remote over time just rubbed the capacitor until it split down the middle.

I've never dropped the remote, and even if I did, I have carpeted floors.

Anyone else encounter this?

I guess I will look for a replacement capacitor and try to solder it in. :(

I've had my M2000 since they started shipping (late!) in November or December of '04 and I've never had any issues with the remote. Same goes for my R1000 that I've had for a year or two.
