A little more information will likely be needed for anyone to be of much help.
for example which web server are you using, are you using xml files or directory structure, and as always mac, PC or other? :)
a couple of basic checks...
1. can you access your web server from another machine? you should be able to get into your file structure over http://my.ip.address ie. http://192.168.0.101
2. did you open up your firewall to allow http traffic on your localnet? If you using iis in windows, windows probably has already built an allowed program entry in windows firewall, if you are using apache or mongoose you may have to build your own entry.
3. is your server on a static ip address (if your router gives your machine a new ip everything breaks)?

Hello & Thanks for the reply.
I am using directory structure (Music,Videos, etc.) and I am on PC (Windows 7 64bit)
1. I can access the webserver on my laptop.
2. I checked my firewall settings and they are fine.
3. And I have Static.

Like I said, it's odd because the Photos and Music work but it won't let me access my Videos.

For instance, is it being taken from the data entered for Web Server Address + Media Root Folder + Videos Folder Path + "/images/" + Genre from XML file (or something like that)? I'm hoping if I knew exactly what the data in that variable looks like it might help me to figure out why my poster.jpg and poster.xml files aren't being found.

Your guess is correct. It looks for:

http://web-server-address/media-root/video-folder-path/images/subgenre/poster.jpg

if you aren't using a media root, it looks for:

http://web-server-address/video-folder-path/images/subgenre/poster.jpg

What web server are you using?

I've got a Q-Nap TS-110 on an Mac Airport network. If it matters, I'm running a Roku HD from early 2010, not one of the newer models.

I was able to test display the some subcategory poster images in Roksbox by pointing a movie entry in my XML file to a few of them so I know there isn't an issue with the files themselves. Now, the XML file uses relative paths for the movie poster rather than the path through HTTP. Based on the URLs above, it would appear that I'm having trouble getting Roksbox to display them via HTTP. I can pull them up via HTTP just fine in a browser.

I was going to post screenshots of my setup in the hope that something painfully obvious would be found, but my server crashed last night and the HD lost all its data so I'm going to be re-building it over the weekend. Thanks for your continued help on this issue. I'll post some images when I get the server back up.

Check your video folder name with the way you have it defined in Roksbox. Make sure they are the same, and that they match case-wise. It is case sensitive.

A little anoyance

Postby Gilgamesh » Fri Jun 10, 2011 8:36 pm

I just ran into a little problem. I am recording and the using Roksbox to watch a fair number of the Gold Cup soccer matches. The method I use will automatically create a folder based on the title of the show that my recording service (NPVR) reports as the main title.

There are two services (actually 4 chs) that I get the matches from. The English language feed (On Fox Sports) is not an issue as its title is "Gold Cup Soccer" but the Spanish Language feed (Where I have to get most games) is titled "Fútbol de la Copa Oro" which displays as "F%c3%batbol de la Copa Oro" as the title.

Since the Gold Cup is only a few weeks long this is not an issue but the failure to correctly render Spanish, or other non-English, characters could be an issue in the future for me and others.

I just wanted to report this no rush on a fix. Monday will be fine.

Hi WilDD

I'm using directory structure along with movie sheets and .bif files. My only issue is the lack of an acknowledgement beep when clicking "Play" or "Resume Play at xx hr. xx min." while viewing the movie sheet. The step that follows is probably the loading of the .bif for thumbs, but sometimes because that takes a few seconds its difficult to tell if in fact play was pressed. The beep would be helpful to know for sure.

Any possibility ?

Thanks for the great channel and all of your excellent work.

I have a better idea - don't watch foreign feeds (just kidding). :)

I'll see what I can do.

Currently the Roku SDK doesn't provide the ability to play a beep or some other sound from that type of screen. It's not a standard grid screen or poster screen. From what I've read, Roku will be providing some type of sound capability from this type of screen in a future SDK release.

In the meantime, I'll see if I can come up with something to let you know that the video player has received the button press.

The folder is the same name. I even changed the name of the folder and it still did not work.

I have been reading through ALL the issues and responses, and I still cannot get Roksbox to work. Windows 7 (64) using IIs 7.5. All my paths are correct, my firewall logs show nothing unusual, I have bound the server IP to port 80, using Basic Authentication and can access the directory structure and files via my browser (Firefox).

Roksbox realized the authentication and I saved the required credentials under the ID I am using. Roksbox replies "Loading" then eventually just times out and throws me back into my Home screen. I have set the timeout up to as high as 6 minutes with the same results. All paths are set correctly and in the correct case i.e; Upper/Lower. I have been working on this for 3 days and am very frustrated. I am a retired IT professional familiar with networks and servers and am at my wits end on this one. How can Roku offer a channel that has absolutely no way of reaching the originator for help? Seems you are opening yourself to a lot of problems. The Roksbox idea is worthy but even worthy ideas need to work. Any new ideas for me?

You are checking from another computer, correct? Not the one with the files, correct? Doing that ensures that access is a roku problem and not a global/general problem. If it works from a laptop on the network, but not the main computer, then you know it is the setup of roksbox and you can go from there. Or you could try mongoose and see if that server seems better.

I set mine up in less than 10 minutes, without issue, using apache and linux.

Roku is not offering anything, the developer is. Also, any questions I have ever asked have been answered by the developer, usually within 24 hours, and is receptive to any additional features.

WilDD is the Roksbox developer, his last post just a few above yours. I'm sure he'll be along to help you.

By the way, Roku makes hardware and the platform software it runs on. Content owners/developers make the channels, both public and private. The SDK is available to anyone and Roku charges nothing to have a channel on the box. Channels provide their own CDN. Roku neither stores or serves any content.

From a web browser on your network, go to your Video directory (something like http://your-ip-address/Media/Videos), and get a source listing (View -> Source) and either post it here, or PM it to me. I might be able to see what is going on from that.
