ESPN3 on Roku

Postby HeadShrinker » Fri Jun 18, 2010 6:48 am

I think I read somewhere that ESPN3 (formerly ESPN360) is coming to the PS3. This is a great channel I use all the time on my computer...watching the US soccer match right now on it. Any news on this coming to the Roku?

PS3? Are you sure it wasn't XBOX360?

The thing to keep in mind regarding ESPN3 is that your internet service provider must be an "ESPN3 affiliated service provider" in order for you to have access. And this applies to access through XBOX as well.

List of ESPN3.com Participating Providers: http://espn.go.com/espn3/affList

Unfortunately for people like me, my ISP is not on the list. Hopefully the addition of ESPN3 to additional platforms will encourage more ISPs to join, or ESPN to drop the requirement.

Roku HD (20F946002749)

Another thing to consider is that the ESPN3 deal is an XBox exclusive. Of course the the exclusivity time period is unknown. Hopefully it is a relative short period of time and we will see ESPN3 move to other platforms before too long.

One other thing to consider as well. ESPN3 is available via PlayOn which means it can be streamed to a DLNA compliant device on your network. I am able to view this on my DLNA devices (DirecTV receiver, PS3, and LG Blu-ray player).

I know it's been mentioned before, but it would be great if the Roku were DLNA compliant.

Notice that except for AT&T, these are all podunk ISPs. No Comcast, no Time Warner.

You're right it was the Xbox 360. I get ESPN3 access through my comcast account.

Comcast is on the list. In addition, Verizon (DSL and FIOS ) is also on the list.

My ISP Charter also provides ESPN3. You must have gotten wrong info.

The only big ones not on that list are Cablevision, Time-Warner, and Qwest.

I'd rather have my ISP cost not go up, than to have a sports channel. Its what made cable tv's cost keep going up, we don't need that to happen to ISPs too.

I'd rather pay the extra dollar a month they may pass on to me for having access to ESPN360 instead of the 45 I would need to pay each month to get access to ESPN / ESPN2 on cable to watch the occasional sporting event I might otherwise miss.

I have ESPN3 on my computer and on my VuNow through PlayOn. I have been watching the World Cup mainly on the computer on a HD TV and I have to say that the quality is really poor. ESPN3 seems incapable of maintaining a decent quality stream for more than a couple on minutes on any of their archived games. It is better than nothing but not by much.

If ESPN3 was brought to the Roku with the low quality I am seeing it would give Roku a VERY bad image in the sports watching world.

The quality might be suspect but I find, in general, the video quality far exceeds that of my other option for live access to sporting events.....the radio.

With no cable TV, I actually listen to a lot of games on the radio, unless they are on ESPN3 or OTA.....so yeah, it's not the greatest video, but it's better then the radio.
