Speed test app.

Postby Crow550 » Sat Oct 02, 2010 5:45 pm

Who thinks it would be handy to have a channel or built in.

A speed test to see how fast the network is on the the ROKU DVP. Might be useful if you have Wifi.

Something like a Speedtest.net channel or like I said built in. So you goto like settings and run it.

Would be helpful for troubleshooting.

Even better, a 'Display' option like the PS3 which displays audio, video and total streaming speed during video playback. Heck, just total speed would be nice.

Weird I was just thinking about that very thing today.

That's basically what Playback Debugging does. I don't really care what the last mile speed of my network is. The connection speed the player gets to the streaming server is what's important. That's what debugging shows.

Playback Debugging
[HOME] 5 times, [REW] 3 times, [FF] 2 times
Then select enable playback debugging.

I would still like to see what jcmolet described above, though.

It is a really nice feature. Tap the 'Display' button during video playback and you get the following video and audio data, among other information:

[4] Sound codec / channel number / sampling rate / bit rate

[5] Video codec / bit rate

Here's something I whipped up quick and dirty:
https://owner.roku.com/Account/ChannelC ... =speedtest

It runs the Netflix Speed Test as well as a speedtest.net test. I have to say upfront that I'm not sure how useful it is. I get wildly varying results between consecutive runs as well as between running a test on my computer vs. on the Roku. At times, I get a 10x difference in bit rates and what the Roku shows wouldn't even support a 1 dot stream. I also get a significant difference running the tests on my two boxes. One thing that is consistent everywhere is my speedtest.net results which always show pretty much what I'd expect for my connection.

Let me know what you all think.

Me neither, but any data is useful, and this gives me lots of it, quickly. Thank you very much.

Which speedtest.net server are you using?
When I run this test on my computer, the results vary significantly depending on the server I select.
Would you consider adding an option to select a speedtest.net server?

I'd have to say I'm using whichever speedtest.net server your DNS returns for speedtest.net. I'd be willing to add an option to select a server if I can figure out how to easily get a list of speedtest servers.

I modified it to use the "closest" speedtest server. Go into the channel store to resync and get the latest version.

I still have to figure out what's up with the Netflix results. Is anyone else seeing very inconsistent Netflix results and results that differ radically from the speedtest.net results?

Cool app. I was thinking more of a GUI like speedtest.net offers. This is neat though. Keep playing with it. Add in some other speed test stuff too from other sites. :P Just keep tinkering with it.

Good so far.

Can you get it to list the lan speed & internet speed? That might be useful. Keep up the great work.

When I run SpeedTest.net on nearby servers, the closest is not the fastest. Here are results for two tests on each of two servers:

Closest server (Washington, DC - approx 12 KM) 3.48 mb/s and 4.55 mb/s
Fastest nearby server (Frederick, Md - approx 72 KM) 13.27 mb/s and 14.10 mb/s

Note: the distances are estimates shown by the speedtest app on my iPod touch. The results shown are from a wired connection on my desktop computer.

MacAl, that's interesting. Maybe I'll put in the ability to select the server. Have you tried this app on your Roku, and if so, which server does it choose? Do you get similar results between the Roku and your iPod?
