Roku software update 2.8 coming soon

Postby davezatz » Fri Oct 29, 2010 10:34 am

Last night at a holiday preview press event in NYC, Roku had version 2.8 of the software on display. All I know so far is the Channel Store will look like the new Netflix experience, the home screen will get Roku-provided themes, and we'll be allowed to re-order channels. I assume there will be more...

Interesting. I know the 2.7 grid interface only supported portrait oriented pictures. Good to see landscape making an appearance (hopefully some png and gif support too).

Interesting. My guess is we will see a few changes over the next month or so. Obviously the Roku folks want to update their devices to the greatest extent possible in time for the holiday shopping season.

Good! This is needed badly. I hope they use the interface on more than just the channel store. No one uses that hardly at all. It is needed once you enter a channel. E.g. Revision3 is a side scrolling monster. Such a waste of screen real estate.

I hope the rebuffering issue gets hammered out...

...but ultimately we love our Roku!

Apparently the "Netflix" type grid is available as part of the 2.7 SDK, so developers should be able to implement that type of interface and get away from the side-scrolling monster. It's just up to them to go through the effort of updating their channels. The newly revamped Pod TV channel makes use of the grid, for instance.
