Livestation 24hr live news channels app

Postby tobarefeet » Fri Nov 05, 2010 5:11 am

I wrote to www.livestation.com asking if they could create a channel on Roku. For those of you that don't know Livestation, it's a site that broadcasts 15-20 live TV news stations from around the world in English, Arabic, French, Chinese, et cetera. Stations like BBC World Service, United Nations TV, Press TV, Al Jazeera English (yeah yeah, save the political commentary. Most of Al Jazeera English staff is from the BBC, CBC, and the States and they report no different than US Networks) NASA TV, Newschannels from Russia, France, Burma and so on.
Livestation wrote me back that they would be interested in creating a channel on Roku if they got more requests. Roku doesn't current have a live news channel and this would be perfect for the world-wide users of Roku.
Please write to Livestation so they will create a live news channel.

Done. A Livestation app/channel on the Roku player would be great.

On a related note, there is a source for foreign news on Roku, MHz Networks. While the news feeds are slightly delayed vice live - you can see the broadcast within 24 hours of the original airing - it does give you access to France 24 (France), RT (Russia), ANI News (Asian - Indian) and Al Jazeera English News.

Yep, good channel also there. Livestation for sure fills a niche if Roku is looking to swipe more and more people from cable and sat. With Netflix, Amazon, Pandora, and soon Hulu Plus, the addition of a package of world news channels would surely be a great benefit to furthering Roku's brand.

Agreed. Hopefully more users will contact Livestation. Too often people make posts here asking for a particular channel. The reality is they need to contact the content owners/distributors.

Every time the conversation of dropping our Limited Basic Cable subscription comes up, Live News (CNN) is the only thing that keeps us paying $15/mo to Time Warner.
Bring it on. I'd rather use that $15 for Hulu Plus and other Premium Services that offer SO much more bang for the buck.

Yes, the way to making owners/distributors less leery of tools like Roku is to work with them. Too many people think that for paying $59 for a Roku that the world should be handed to them with no further expenses. It doesn't work that way. I live in the US and get a lot of TV programming via bit torrent from England, Australia, New Zealand. I would gladly pay $10-20 a month to access all the BBC, ITV, and other countries offer. But I can't so I have to bit torrent shows I can't get in the US. I would rather pay a fair sum each month for a news channel lineup, a sports lineup, et cetera, in a manner of pick and choose rather than $50-120 a month for hundreds of channels I dont watch on cable. It would be worth paying $40-50 a month to really have a choice of many different channels.
I see people here crying about paying for anything and shake my head. They don't get it that creating content costs money.

I also requested this.

They have iPhone apps for several channels (CNBC, BBC news, Al-Jazeera); could those streams be tapped into on an unofficial basis?

From Livestation:

Dear nighthawk_md,

Thank you for contacting us at Livestation with your suggestion.

We will take your suggestion on broad and look into the Roku market. We may make an application for the Roku if we get enough demand for it.

However at this moment in time, our US channel list is so small now to put any resources for making an application for the Roku.

In the meantime, check http://www.livestation.com or http://www.livestation.com for anything new with our services.

Kind regards,

Quang Chau
Livestation

Curious; the rep doesn't seem to think that people in the US would want access to foreign live news content...

To the developers: am I correct in assuming that, in general, programming a channel is not terribly challenging as long as the stream URLs are freely available or easily accessible? Would Livestation (or any other content provider) making a channel really require that many "resources?"

And here is the response to my inquiry:

The operative word in the reply is 'demand' IMO. Hopefully Roku users in these forums - even those that may not be that interested right now - will take the time to contact Livestation and demonstrate that there is a demand for their service on the Roku player.

I submitted a request asking for permission to create an independent channel, in the event that they don't want to do something themselves.

Good on everyone writing. Livestation is based in England and I don't think the developer is looking at the long term correctly. There are millions of immigrants in the US from countries that have newschannels on livestation. As Roku gets bigger and bigger more and more people are going to want that kind of lineup to view. I have no tech ability to create a channel if they were okay with it. I would certainly do what I could to spread the word.
I think we need to keep writing.
