Roku XD/S and 1080i -- will it work?

Postby OnMyWay2Half » Wed Dec 08, 2010 5:47 pm

I saw some older threads from 2008 but nothing more current. Does the Roku XD/S support 1080i with the component cable?

I have a 2001 Sony HDTV that only supports 1080i, not 720p.

Can anyone answer this question please?

Thanks...
Doug

Thanks for the quick (but disappointing) answer....

I also have a 2001 Sony Wega that only accepts 1080i. I was able to get around the 720p limitation by running my component cable from my Roku XDS to my Home Theater pre-amp. Refer to my previous post. viewtopic.php?f=28&t=18837&start=300#p223800

I responded to your previous post about your setup sounding strange to me, and questioning if it'd actually be outputting correctly at all through the Roku that way. And also, that 5 MB should be plenty to stream HD content. 3 MB is plenty on mine. I get HD everytime, with no problems through wi-fi. So I have no idea why you wouldn't. As I said on the other post, it could somehow be the setup. I don't know enough about it. But I do know that 5 MB is in fact enough.

So ... from what I read above, the XD/S can not output 1080i via component.

I have a HD set that will accept either 1080i or 720p via component.
Will the XD/S allow it's configuration to output 720p via component?
I need to know that before I buy it.

Is there a XD/S user manual available for download that I could look thru?

Thanks,

Dennis

Thank you for the link!

So I connect to my set via component. It can support up to 720p via component.

If I am watching a Netflix streaming video that supports 720p streaming, will the XD/S output 720p on the component interface or will it limit it to 480p as many devices do? . In other words, does the XD/S only output HD on it's HDMI link?

Both 480p and 720p are supported via component on all Roku models that have component ports - a 720p stream is not downscaled to 480p.
480p and 720p (and on some models 1080p) are all supported via HDMI provided the content is encoded in a Roku-compatible format.

If you have a 2001 model, it's on it's last legs and I guaranty the picture isn't nearly as sharp as it was 5 years ago., so whether or not you'd be able to get 1080P shouldn't matter too much.

from most TV owners' experiences these days, you're probably lucky the TV's lasted this long! Not a statement against Sony, but TV's in general.
Yeah, I got some Rokus.

Holy crap, are you serious? I've been thinking about upgrading to a new tv just for the heck of it, but now I think I'll stick with me free ~20 year old tvs until they die. Which might be after I do.
