Can I stream a DVD to the Roku (from a networked device)

Postby manoflinux » Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:39 pm

YES!!!!!!!!!
Below is a locked post about streaming a dvd to a roku.
Just wanted to tell billc124 that times have changed. I was able to stream a dvd to a roku using the newest version of vlc (the one you download from git)
Here is how to make it work.
oh when you compile vlc make sure you copy the vlc-wrapper program fron the bin directory into same directory as the compiled version of vlc. (usually cd bin; cp vlc-wrapper ..; )
This assumes assume the following:
The Web Server root directory is /var/www
The domain name of the web server is 192.168.250.24
The stream segments & index files will be written into /var/www/streaming/ and will be accessed via http://192.168.250.24/streaming/...
The destination stream name index file will be called "mystream.m3u8"
Code: Select all
vlc-wrapper --sout-x264-vbv-bufsize=10000 --mms-caching 0 -I dummy dvdsimple:///dev/sr0  vlc://quit --sout='#transcode{vcodec=h264,vb=1536,venc=x264,acodec=mp4a}:std{access=livehttp{seglen=10,delsegs=false,numsegs=0,index=/var/www/streaming/mystream.m3u8,index-url=http://192.168.250.24/streaming/mystream-########.ts},mux=ts{use-key-frames},dst=/var/www/streaming/mystream-########.ts}'

Can I stream a DVD to the Roku (from a networked device)
by utah_scott » Sat Dec 26, 2009 6:13 am

Since the Roku player doesn't have an internal DVD player, would it be possible to stream a DVD from a networked PC to the Roku?

I do use it for Netflix, Pandora, etc. and understand this is it's intended use, but it would be nice to be able to stream a New Release DVD to this TV's (master bedroom, wall-mount, no DVD player) location.

Thanks in advance.

Not at the moment, someone could develop a channel using the SDK, but the DVD would need to be ripped to a HDD first, you wouldn't be able to just pop it into a computer DVD drive for playback on the Roku.

and yes all I had to do with put the dvd in my computer and run a program!!!
BTW it helps if you run Linux!!! if you don't run Linux, change to Linux.

You don't need to run Linux to do any of this.

I may be overlooking the obvious, but why would someone go through all that trouble to stream a DVD from a pc to a Roku attached to a TV when a $30 DVD plugged in to a TV could accomplish the same feat with much less hassle? And not to mention the possible hiccups of wireless streaming...

+1. It's a neat hack, but if you need to put a DVD into a device anyway, it seems much easier to just use a DVD player - it's not like most TVs are lacking inputs (and if they are, a switch box is certainly still easier).

you guys really have no vision.
yes streaming a dvd doesnt make sense, unless it blueray.
but you dont have to stream just a dvd. I can stream anything on my hdd.
and yes you dont have to have linux to do this, just to do it reliably.
plus with a vlc remote control program for your phone(android, blackberry, iPhone) you can use the vlc web interface to add media to your playlist.
The reason I used a dvd in this example was the previous post.
is this better? does this better allow your brain to wrap around it?

vlc-wrapper --mms-caching 0 -I dummy /home/myuser/somefile.avi vlc://quit --sout='#transcode{width=320,height=240,fps=25,vcodec=h264,vb=256,venc=x264{aud,profile=baseline,level=30,keyint=30,ref=1},acodec=mp4a,ab=96}:std{access=livehttp{seglen=10,delsegs=false,numsegs=0,index=/var/www/streaming/mystream.m3u8,index-url=http://192.168.250.24/streaming/mystream-########.ts},mux=ts{use-key-frames},dst=/var/www/streaming/mystream-########.ts}'

No, you don't need Linux to do this reliably.

Any Windows Client/Server, OS X Client/Server, etc. can easily do what you're referring to, reliably and with much greater ease.

<The entropy of a perfect crystal, at absolute zero kelvin, is exactly equal to zero. - Third Law of Thermodynamics>, Windows/OS X have one-click transcoding/web servers available to them.

ok post a howto on how to do this in windows. please include compiling vlc on windows.(the version you can download doesnt support HLS)
also included setting up a webserver, which is needed for this work.
for me it was
apt-get install apache2
after that one command I had a running a web server and my example uses the default paths so you dont have to do anything else.
That seems pretty easy to me.

oh here is how I compiled vlc for linux

apt-get remove vlc
apt-get build-dep vlc
git clone git://git.videolan.org/vlc.git
cd vlc
./bootstrap && ./configure --enable-x264 && make

pretty easy. I dont think your howto will be as short or as easy,
also how many reboots did you during this process? at least one to install the web server and development environment.
but probably more, you know how many I did during this process? zero.
cant wait to see the how to.

Installing IIS or Apache on Windows, or enabling Apache on OS X requires zero reboots. This isn't NT 4 or Linux with a less-than-modern scheduler era. And using Chaneru requires neither as it is just an application that listens on a high port.

You sound like a kid, so I get the condescending language, but it isn't required here.
