Roku won't recognize my External Hard Drive

Postby somebuddy » Sat Jul 09, 2011 10:26 pm

I just spent weeks digitizing all of my DVDs into mp4 files so that my Roku could read them. But now my Roku won't even recognize my new external Western Digital 3TB harddrive. I've unplugged both and rebooted both, to no avail. The hard drive is the exact same format as my other external passport, which the Roku reads fine.

Thoughts?

The Roku only supports up to a 2TB partition, so in order to use that drive you'll have to split the space amongst multiple partitions

Why does it only support 2TB?

Because that is the way it is designed.

It is, I believe, a limitation of the operating system running on the Roku.

So I reformatted the 3 TB into 3 separate 1 TB drives, and it still won't recognize any of the drives.

Ideas?

I believe the Roku is running a 32-bit version of Linux which has a 2 TB partition size limit unless the kernel includes GPT support, which apparently the Roku's Linux kernel does not include. Just guessing, eh?

Is your drive port-powered or externally powered? The Roku's USB port may not be able to supply enough power to power your drive if it is port-powered. Quoting Roku's support, "USB flash drives and externally powered USB hard drives work best with the Roku player. Some USB powered hard drives will not be able to draw enough power from the Roku player to function properly, especially if used with another drive on a USB hub."

It's externally powered. At 3TB, it sort of has to be.

Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - the same setting as my passport 1 TB that works with the Roku.

As installed by Apple, yes. Try fat32 with partition sizes no larger than 2GB.

Probably won't work, but have you tried a using different USB cable to connect the drive?
