Big Fish Instant Games access

Postby raven1 » Mon May 06, 2013 10:47 am

Question:
I notice the Big Fish Instant Games app is now available. But when I go to add the channel it says - "This channel can't be added because it is not compatible with any devices linked to your account."

We have a Roku 2 XS with motion based control and it came with Angry Birds.

Does this mean that Big Fish can only be played with a Roku 3?
Thanks

If I remember correctly, it is Roku 3 only.

That would be a shame. The Roku 2 XS with Angry Birds just came out at Christmas and it has the motion based controller. I would feel a little ripped if my Roku product was already not compatiable with roku apps just 5 months later. I understand technology is changing rapidly, but 5 months?

The Roku 2 XS will have been out for two years next month. It was released in June of 2011.

Didn't find one quite that early, but here's a wayback machine page from August, 2011 showing the model comparison AND listing "FREE full edition of Angry Birds™ game" for the 2XS.

As for the Official red hockey puck "Angry Birds Edition" Amazon says they first started selling it for the 2011 christmas season.

You may have just bought it last christmas, but it is coming up on 2 years now. :)

Wow, didn't know that the motion based controller had been out since August 2011.
I guess it is what it is. Just seems strange that a roku with a motion based controller can't play similar games as Angry Birds, etc.

If this app is just for Roku 3 they probably should note that on the app page.

The R3 has a much faster processor than the R2 line. It *might* be that whatever system they designed to make the whole catalog of Big Fish games available on Roku requires that extra speed to function. I agree it should be clearly noted on the app page if an app is only available on specific hardware.

I'd bet it's temporary, as they optimize the engine for the Roku 2 (or maybe wait for the 5.0 rollout to be completed?). They announced the partnership nearly a year ago (http://www.destructoid.com/roku-boxes-g ... 2039.phtml), so I'd be pretty surprised if it was intended for Roku 3 only.

That was my next thought..There are existing Roku 2 games still being ported over to the 3, so there's obviously a fair bit of difference in the two platforms' native instruction sets.

Thanks for all the comments. You guys maybe right that it will be available for the Roku 2 XS in the future.

One thing I have learned with Roku is their level of communication to the customer and future customers, on apps and release dates are not very clear most of the time. I know a lot of variables go into these types of developments, but some companies seem to communicate better than others.

With that said we really like our Roku. Great product and look forward to additional content in the future.

Im on Roku 3 but still unable to access bigfishgames channel. Error when logging in.

Hi cranko,

This is Stacy with Big Fish Games. If you don't already have a Big Fish Unlimited account, you'll need to create one here:

http://www.bigfishgames.com/unlimited/roku

Once you've created the account, you should be able to go back to the Big Fish Instant Games channel and sign in.

If you are still having trouble, our Customer Support team should be able to help you out. Here is a link to our Big Fish Unlimited help site: http://www.bigfishgames.com/help/unlimited

Then again, many of Big Fish's hidden object games downloadable on iOS easily run to the hundreds of megabytes each. Assuming similar sizes for the Unlimited catalog of streaming games, and with that catalog already numbering 234 games... well, this could be a case where a 32-64GB microSD card in a Roku may actually prove to be useful?

P.S. It's interesting that upon first login, the channel displays a warning about having better performance when connected via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi (even if the Roku in question is already connected via Ethernet).

Actually, streaming means that the game will be playing remotely (you don't have to download the game), you'll just be getting the video and audio on your Roku. The great part is that you could play every game and it wouldn't take up any extra space on your device

Question: How do we remotely simulate the keyboard's left, right, up,down, etc and mouse motion on our roku? How is that streaming done as a video?

The Big Fish Instant Games subscription service has been discontinued:

http://bigfishgames.custhelp.com/app/an ... /a_id/2219

No wonder I couldn't find it on the Channel Store anymore (even though it's still on our boxes). Guess they'll stop charging my card this month.

I'll have to look for a replacement channel to fill the slot... maybe RealPlayer Cloud (though it's a different category so I'll have to re-position other channels somehow)...
