Roku 2 XS (3100X) Vs. Roku 3 (4200X)

Postby Pete Moss » Sun Aug 18, 2013 8:07 am

I received an email from Roku a while back extolling the features of the Roku 3. Is there a compelling reason for me to upgrade from the 3100x to the 4200x? My house is wired up with Tyco CAT6E so I don't use wireless. Router and switch is Gigabit Ethernet capable and internet is 100Mbps. Router and switch support 802.1p QoS. Superficially, the two Rokus look almost identical.

The Roku 3 has a faster processor so it should render quicker menu/game remote response but as both have gaming remotes unless you just have to have the latest model or your menu control is really bugging you I wouldn't jump to upgrade just yet. That may change with software upgrades in the future but for now just wait and see.

OK Thanks. I did find 4200Rs for $79.95 shipped but I suppose the forum rules don't allow identification.

Also remember that the Roku 3 is HDMI only. That's stopping me from buying one. I also noticed the 2XS has been discontinued and replaced with a 2XD, which does not have an ethernet port. Only Roku 3 has it now. I guess I'll have to find a refurbed 2XS when I finally buy another Roku, which i had been waiting to do until the 3's came out, which I can't use.

The 2XS was actually replaced by the 3. The 2XD came out at the same time as the 2XS.

To me, same difference...same end result.

+1
I feel the same way you do workerdummy.Without an analog video output, the R-3 is useless to me,and i'll also be buying another R-2XS when the time comes.I use the analog output waaay more often than i use HDMI.

If you dont have an HDMI on your tv just buy a hdmi to component converter. they work great and with a little creativity you can get past the HDCP encryption protection.

I have 4 Roku 2 XS STBs and one Roku 3. The Roku 3 is definitely worth the upgrade. Much faster and more stable.
