Re: "Lilyhammer" now available on Netflix! Netflix original

It doesn't seem like my kind of show, but it is pretty exciting seeing another crack in cable. I dumped cable a couple years ago, and haven't missed it, OTA and Netflix filled in pretty well. New series made for Internet distribution, is pretty exciting. It used to be that TV series were just for br...

Re: Netflix has poor picture quality

I had the same problem, but I hadn't realized why. For my upstairs TV, I have an old Amiga NTSC monitor. It doesn't have a tuner, so I used an old VCR. I had my converter box for OTA hooked into the one of the VCR's line in ports, and the Roku hooked into the other of the VCR's line in ports. With t...

Re: The future of streaming players

There are going to be a lot of people who only purchased their HDTV relatively recently, and won't be in the market for a new TV for years. Integrated streaming won't persuade them to ditch their existing STB. Unless there is an industry standard, I wouldn't expect to get many updates for integrated...

Re: Cable cutter looking for OTA advice

Never by anything from RCA. RCA was a proud name, and used to stand for good quality. RCA isn't even a company anymore. It went bankrupt, and now all that is left is the RCA trademark, that gets licensed to companies making cheap, crappy electronics so that people will see this name on it and think ...

Re: Roku is a lot of hassle just to have a remote.

I just don't see the hassle with the Roku. A laptop is much more hassle. My Roku gets tucked away in an unused corner of my TV stand. I plug it in and forget about it.

Re: With the price of Cable going up, who's cutting the cord

I have a TV tuner connected on my computer. I then can access the recorded files over my home network. If I wanted to covert them to another format, there is software availble for that. I usually delete after watching though. Much cheaper than TiVo.

Re: Is real time media streaming really viable?

Yes, it is viable. It's hard to imagine that the problems won't be solved. Decades ago, someone once predicted that computers of the future would be the size of the Empire State Building. They didn't count on the transistor allowing you to have vastly more computing power in a much smaller sp...

Re: Hulu Fears Netflix

It's all data distribution. The old models are based on data being difficult and expensive to distribute. Internet distribution is cheap and easy. People want to watch video on their TV, not on their computers, but they don't care how the data got there. With the new technology we have, it's getting...

Re: The Next Channel to Clamor For...

PBS C-Span Big Ten Network web content: I know we aren't going to get the games from the BTN channel, but the content on the BTN website would be great, for example, highlights of games. BTN also has PPV to watch some games online, games that aren't being televised on the BTN channel. I'd like that ...

Re: Tied the knot...with cable?

You could get a TV tuner for your computer. It's cheaper than a stand-alone DVR. The disadantage is that it is more complicated to playback your programs (it can be done, see the RoxBox thread). There is also the DTVPal DVR which goes for $250. It's a one time payment, no paying for program listings...

Hotel WiFi is often terribly slow. Sometimes the performance isn't even up to dial-up speeds.

Re: PlayON is gone!

Roku has in the past made a distinction between the Channel Store and private channels. If they want to redefine the terms, fine.

Re: Mark Cuban on Content Distribution

re: where he talks about younger people's TV habits as they get older are just plain wrong In my estimation Cuban is wrong about a lot of things but certainly entitled to his opinions. I think he speaks from his own prejudices and his own financial well being. So I consider the source. Good for Cub...
