I'll give that a try when I get home tonight, if I can get the problem reproduced (at the moment my box is unplugged). I don't understand how it could get to the video format screen though, since the box can be sitting there running (playing mp3's / whatever) and then without warning enter this state.

Mostly-dead PhotoBridge

My green power LED is flashing and the box isn't responsive :x If I remove power for a randomly long amount of time (minutes to weeks), after plugging it back in I can boot and eventually the box will go back to this not-so-good state. (Sorry to use such technical terms!) Is this likely to be a bad ...

Mame port?

I'm just curious... has anyone considered writing a port to Mame (www.mame.net) to the PB, or is there some reason (ram, cpu) that such a port may be impractical?

Today I was able to get the Maxtor NAS to work briefly (I didn't change anything, just noticed it working as I did a final test before packing it up to return it).... it played about 10 minutes of video then stopped. I exchanged it for a Ximeta NetDisk, and first impressions are pretty good. We'll s...

Maxtor Network Storage

I bought a Maxtor Network Storage device this weekend; a 10/100bT interface, 300MB, 7200RPM, 16MB Cache. I'm able to play MP3's without any noticed problem so far, but video is a different thing. When I try to play an mpg, I have a prolonged "Please Wait" in the center of my screen, and then a broke...

The first thing I'd suggest is upgrading to the latest version of firmware, because 3rd party software generally is dependant on that. The PB will likely arrive with a 1.5.xx version, which is rather old. The reason for this is though it's old, it's the current "stable" release, where later releases...

Wow. Not having any inventory for the Christmas season is, uh... implication of things not good to come. In general terms I could understand not making more current models if a newer model is around the corner, but in products like this, this is simply not something done between October and the end ...

openssl however expects to find perl in /usr/bin and as this is a readonly filesystem, I'm now trying to get that sorted out although don;t know ehre to start, unless I start editing the configure script for openssl I suspect editing openssl's configuration is the best bet. If you want to get somet...

I have no direct experience with it, but I've heard of a "mini perl" distribution which may be easier to get built for the PB. I've heard of this perl varient from other embedded Linux platforms.

You can edit the file /etc/rc.local and add (to the bottom of it) the commands you want to run at boot time.

If I change to Linux are there any obvious issues I may run into that anyone knows of? You mean like more stability less frustration giving you too much time on your hands? ;) I would suggest using NFS instead of SMB for your connection to a Linux box. I'm sure SMB can work, but NFS seems to be mor...

I would expect that placing it as close as possible (wiring-wise) to the PhotoBridge will give you the best playback throughput - especially if you've got a switch in the livingroom (versus a hub).

By chosing to download something clearly indicated as Beta, you are chosing to take the risk that nothing will work properly ;) Best of all though, since this device allows development on an open platform, if you don't like the pace someone else is moving at (keep in mind Roku isn't getting paid for...

I haven't used VncSix, but assuming its just a VNC client... the PC you use needs to run a Vnc Server, NOT a web server. Vnc is basically a remote desktop tool, and through it, you can drive your web client to fetch sites just as you could from your desktop.

Unless you are a constant CF card user, if you can get your hands on a 128MB to 256MB CF card and just leave it in the slot you'll be just fine (other than having to restart it each time you reboot). I believe there is a way to avoid manually restarting it. I don't remember specifics, but I think i...
