If the tv is HD, you should be hooking up to the tv with HD (HDMI cables), otherwise you won't get a correct display. Those annoying forced auto previews by Netflix (which they won't allow the user to shut off) are reason to cancel the service without even looking at all the other annoyances built into the app.

These companies like Roku will never stop trying to fix what isn't broken. The home screen is perfectly fine now, if they alter it to focus on The Roku Channel which I don't use and couldn't care less about it will be a big push to make me not buy another Roku device in the future.
