I assume they left the year off "late summer" so that their delivery estimates will be no more innaccurate than in the past.

Well, due to issues that they just couldn't have forseen a year ago, they aren't really able to devote the manpower to updating a couple links on their own web pages.

It's the pattern thing I was ranting about earlier.

And, as people have been saying for the last year, An occasional status update would have gone a long way toward bolstering confidence in their commitment to customers. That, and instead of flatly denying that the product was hitting end-of-life, maybe even a frank admission that the decision was un...

People routinely ask me whether I think they should buy a Soundbridge. I'm one of those "go to geeks" that people come to for purchasing suggestions. I virtually always steer them to the Slim Devices products instead. Why? Because of my experience with the support (or lack thereof) of the ...

I don't know if I'd say "dead."

I'd say, "probably behind 'washing the boss's car' on the priority list."

So, next you're going to tell us that the HD-1000 isn't really dead, but that it's pretending to be for tax purposes?

The question I have is: If it really were dead, how would we be able to tell the difference between that and what we have now?

I find that I've spent more total time tweaking MP3 tags (to resolve all the slight differences in artist name, track name, etc) than I originally spent ripping the audio. Sadly, this seems like it's part of the landscape. Yes, a browse by folder would help a lot with this, but you'll still see the ...

Yeah, I assumed that it could handle higher bitrates. It's just that 19.2 is pretty much as much as I've ever needed (gee, I wonder why). When I see other, competing products say "We can stream HDTV, but it's limited to 12 Mbps," I kinda have to laugh.

I keep seeing evidence of the dreaded "Chroma Upsampling Error" bug (see Home Theater Secrets) with a bunch of material played back on the Roku.

Not so much interlace jaggies in the luminance domain, but definite interlace jaggies in the chroma.

SMB.

Although I think I can reproduce the issue if I work from an NFS share on the Mac mini.

One problem I've noted: I have 10,000 tune library, and DON'T normally scan at start up. Of course, it does have to read that .db file on startup (and says "scanning" while it's doing so). Since the .db is stored on an NSLU2 served disk, it also takes longer than it might had it been hosted on somet...

The fact that it can handle/display real 19.2 Mbps HD video and doesn't need some half-baked server software are the two features that just keep me coming back again and again.

I rip with CD-EX in full "paranoia mode". Then, I use Tag&Rename to double check the tags against Amazon, as well as to download cover art.

Bought a few ReplayTVs, only to see them get brokened/orphaned/screwed with/left in the hands of people who don't care.

Bought a couple of Rokus, only to see what we've been seeing.

With any luck, I'll have learned my lesson when shichi hits the market.
