Re: Roku needs Dolby license for DD+

My point is it is silly FOR ME to down convert 5.1 channel to 2.1. My 5.1 channel Sound bar accepts DD5.1. A 2.1 Sound bar is a different issue. Still we can agree being able to decode DD+ within the Roku would be a nice feature. 5.1 soundbar...silly me... but not silly enough to buy into that Fire...

Re: Roku needs Dolby license for DD+

That would indeed be silly. I want 5.1 audio for a 5.1 channels of output. If I wanted stereo I wouldn't have started this post. Guess we will see what the new Apple TV has spec wise today. Then it would seem you are silly also. If you already have all the additional equipment, then getting a cheap...

Re: Roku needs Dolby license for DD+

OR, just output stereo from the Roku instead of 5.1 audio. Don't know why anyone would want mixed 5.1 audio in two channels. Why use a surge protector? A two-outlet box-in-the-wall is enough. Why use a full HD screen on a laptop? 768p is legible. Why get a tablet when you have a smartphone? They bo...

Re: Roku needs Dolby license for DD+

Solution: get a new legit AVR which decodes 5.1 DD+ audio. It's the audio of the future, and of the now I guess. Or an old receiver. I got mine at Goodwill for $40, it has HDMI and DD+. It's not like you need to drop $400 to get "today's audio, today!", you can check out a pawn shop. Prob...

Re: Roku needs Dolby license for DD+

While I understand it is frustrating if your hardware does not support it, the simple fact is that most (all?) 5.1 hardware sold for the last few years supports DD+ via HDMI. So the segment of users that require DD+ decoding over optical is no longer growing. I can't imagine Roku extending much eff...

Re: Rokus, surround sound, and usefulness

We're going to have to agree to disagree. IMO, there is even LESS difference between Prologic and Digital if you don't have all the speakers, compared to Prologic vs Digital and 5.1 speakers properly placed and calibrated. In other words, Prologic is "good enough" with a soundbar. Prologi...

Re: Rokus, surround sound, and usefulness

Anybody that can notice the difference will own the proper equipment anyway...it is the "layman" comment that I mainly disagree with. It's a size thing. Do you really want 5 speakers, wiring, a sub & AVR receiver for a 15x15 room? How about 12x12? 10x10? Sometimes, the soundbar is the...

Re: Rokus, surround sound, and usefulness

So, many years ago I started with a Roku 1 but because it couldn’t produce a picture in HD, I was forced to buy a Roku 2. That solved the picture problem but as referenced many times by myself and others in this forum, I could never get surround sound. I know, I know, the Roku just passes through w...

Re: HBO Go and comcast

This is a very dangerous game they're playing. The Bell System had their conglomeration torn apart over policies like this. If Roku felt an inkling to sue, which would be a tougher climb than a crusade up Everest, it would have precedent to do so. My thinking is that Roku keeps getting strung along ...
