Even if the channel didn't auto play, you would still be using some data to get all the thumbnails.

I just found Pluto tv and installed on my Roku.  I can not find a way to stop it from streaming other than close the app, and not sure about then.   There is a little window up at the top right ( can change to full screen with the * button)  that appears there is always something streaming there.  ...

I hear it only in Netflix from time to time.
If I hear it twice in a few minutes, I exit Netflix & return...this usually fixes the problem.

It would be a lot easier if you installed & ran Plex.

If your TV USB can power your Roku..it's a 50/50 chance that it will turn off when the TV does.
I have 1 TV that turns the USB power off & another that doesn't.

None that I know of.

If you update with the Update My Channels...it said channel updated & disabled...or out of service...something along those lines.

Yes, you can connect it using WPS to your Network.
I use the N300 & never had any issues.
Remember to connect the extender in the same room as the router first, then move it to the room with the Roku.
