Playing aac streams

Wed Apr 02, 2014 9:06 am

I would like to be able to stream this stream:

http://indie.streamon.fm:8000/indie-48k.aac

to my soundbridge.

When I set this as a preset and try to play it, nothing happens.

What I don't understand is how other aac streams work:

http://stream-tx4.radioparadise.com:80/aac-64

Can someone shed some light on this?

cslewis2003,

there are several flavours of AAC. Indie 88's obviously offers an HE-AAC (AACplus) stream which the SoundBridges can't handle (full AACplus support was never implemented by Roku).

There's nothing you can do to play Indie 88 on your SoundBridge, I'm afraid, other than ask the station to additionally provide an MP3 stream.

Radio Paradise's AAC(plus) streams are and have always been compatible with the SoundBridges.

Thanks for the note - although I don't understand how the various AAC Plus formats differ from each other.

For instance I can use ffmpeg to stream both Radio Paradise's and Indie's aac feeds, convert them to sox format, pipe the output to the sox play utility, and they both play correctly. Both streams seem to generate very similar output from the utilities:

indie 88:

Input #0, aac, from 'http://indie.streamon.fm:8000/indie-48k.aac':
Duration: N/A, bitrate: 51 kb/s
Stream #0:0: Audio: aac, 44100 Hz, stereo, fltp, 51 kb/s
Output #0, sox, to 'pipe:':
Metadata:
encoder : Lavf55.33.100
Stream #0:0: Audio: pcm_s32le, 44100 Hz, stereo, s32, 2822 kb/s
Stream mapping:
Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (aac -> pcm_s32le)
Press [q] to stop, [?] for help

-: (sox)

Encoding: Signed PCM
Channels: 2 @ 32-bit
Samplerate: 44100Hz
Replaygain: off
Duration: unknown

If you're not afraid of reading technical stuff, you'll find comprehensive information here and here.

The stream (codec) analysis you posted lacks important information (SBR, PS etc.) and therefore doesn't tell where the differences are.

Furthermore it's also possible that a station's server prevents the SoundBridge from playíng a stream either because of technical reasons or by deliberately excluding certain clients. Radio Paradise use Icecast whereas Streamon have their own server software. To check if there's a problem with Streamon's server you can try to play the URL http://ckua.streamon.fm:8000/CKUA-64k-m.mp3 on your SoundBridge. If it plays then AACplus most likely is the issue.

HI, I have the Roiku Sounbdbridge M1000 and I too wanted to add Indie 88 to a preset "radio" channel on the M1000. Anyways, the M1000 can't play the AAC+ stream. However, my M1000 is connected to a SlimServer library and I was able to add the Indie88 URL to the SlimServer stream channels, and that worked since it's SlimServer that is decoding the AAC+ stream, not the M1000.

Thanks
