Great to see Roku at more major retailers... Exposure is always a good thing!!! Though, until Best Buy's sale on the M1000 is over, get the (better) VF Display for the same price...

Hope you sell TONS, Roku... (and I don't even have mine yet... Gotta wait till Christmas!!!)

M500 vs. M1000

Is there any difference (other than the price)?

Looks like a LCD display instead of the VFD of the M1000 & M2000

What does it mean in the press release when it refers to the M500 being available at Radio Shack "through the end of the year". Is that different from "available now"? The implication seems to be that something happens in the New Year and it's not available thereafter.

Also, can this be purchased direct from Roku and, if so, what sort of availability are we looking at (when)?

I love my M2000 Roku but have some (initial) feedback on the M500. Frankly, I am looking for a low cost way to potentially but a bunch of these devices in various rooms. However, the M500 doesn't seem different enough to the M1000. It's smaller and has an inferior display (is that correct?) - but it's only $50 cheaper. Given Best Buys current discount there would appear to be no reason to go with the M500 right now and, even after that Best Buy deal ends (if it does), I'd still like to see a real simple, "packaged" unit for somewhere around $150 retail. I think a few bucks could possibly be saved by dropping the support for the digital audio.

My thoughts... :-)

I believe the "through the end of the year" refers to "exclusive", at Radio Shack.

BTW, the web site is apparently running a photo of the M1000 on their page by mistake.

The M500 display is a character-based LCD, and doesn't support the graphical visualizers as depicted in the photo (it does have some basic visualizers like the VU meters, though). It's also a sort of yellow-green illumination. Nice-looking display for an LCD, really.

It's also not smaller than the M1000. Same size, different display.

I am impressed with Roku's forward movement each day when it comes to the SoundBridge product line! Give the development, sales/marketing, and suit staffs a round of applause.

Now just don't forget about us early adopters once you get huge!

The M500 is carried exclusively by Radio Shack at this point. We'll make an announcement if its distribution is expanded to other retailers at a later time. Thanks for your interest!

Hey RokuMike,

Just an FYI that it does not seem to include Radio Shack Canada. I've inquired and they said they do not carry them.

Yes, I believe you're correct. Sorry for being unclear. I believe it's Radio Shack, in the USA only at this point.

For the record, I walked my interested mother-in-law into Radio Shack today with an eye towards advocating the M500. I half expected them to have none in stock but I was a little surprised when no-one had any idea what it was (I spoke to two sales associates and explain what the unit did). They were completely clueless as to the M500, which is somewhat surprising given the fact that Radio Shack apparently is the exclusive distribution channel through the end of the year.
