Wireless instability; router complains; M1000 firmware 2.5

Sat Sep 16, 2006 11:29 am

I have noticed that my M1000 appears and disappears regularly from my network. I have some logs from the Apple Airport Extreme basestation which is my router, and there are some very odd things there.

Here's a snapshot:

Sep 16 17:49:07 192.168.0.1 Danieles-Airport-basestation dot11: Deauthenticated with station 00:10:c6:41:c7:a6 (inactivity).

Sep 16 18:11:57 192.168.0.1 Danieles-Airport-basestation dot11: Associated with station 00:10:c6:41:c7:a6

All this is in the space of 20 minutes. There are authentication events (not sure exactly what; there is no authentication required to log on to the wireless network), deauthentication events because of "inactivity", and deauthentication events because of "invalid class-3 frame".

Any idea what these are all about?

Thanks,

Daniele

Strange router logs complaining about my SOundBridge M1000:

[quote="evildmp"]Sep 16 17:49:07 192.168.0.1 Danieles-Airport-basestation dot11: Deauthenticated with station 00:10:c6:41:c7:a6 (inactivity).

After rebooting the SoundBridge, these errors stop. However, they return after a period of a few days. It sounds like the SoundBridge is if not crashing, then getting into a strange state. (Sometimes it does actually crash, and needs to be rebooted.)

I've forwarded the link to this thread to our WiFi boffins to ask them to have a look!

Could be a Dauth (deauthorization) attack on the Wi Fi, trying to break WEP.

I found this thread on a MacOSX forum:

http://macosx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=231219

It's only vaguely related, the person was seeing the same behaviour with Airport Express and Airtunes. It's not clear what base station they were using, but their 'fix' was to use a static IP rather than DHCP.

The actual error could be a result of a poor WiFi connection caused by things such as

* A long distance between AP and Soundbridge (or may walls)
* A noise source such as a Microwave interfering with the WiFi
* A neighbors WiFi setup using the same 802.11 channel

Because you only see this every few days, it seems more likely that it's a noise source, though the effect of a noise source would be increased the further your AP and Soundbridge are apart.
