URL Streaming App?

Mon Mar 26, 2007 6:02 pm

Hey All,

Is there a URL streaming app for the PB? What I am interested in doing is viewing streaming video from the web using the PB. For example, I don't get NASA TV with my cable, but want to watch it. It will stream over the web. How can I do this with the PB?

I believe CinemaSix will accept an http url. Otherwise, you could use a UPnP server like TVersity and serve the web streams to the PhotoBridge that way.

As the last remaining maintainer of CinemaSix I should reply to this. :-)

Yes, it will stream from a URL. I have used this feature a few times to stream from VLC.

The CinemaSix page is here:

What stream formats will CinemaSix support? Quicktime? WindowsMedia? etc?

Only MPEG-2 natively supported by the PB hardware, sorry.

However, VLC can transcode from several other formats to MPEG-2 on the fly. You might check the VLC website to find the currently-supported list of formats.

OK. Wasn't sure if anyone had written any video codecs. I'll have to see about VLC. I know it can play Windows Media streams and I'm pretty sure it will handle QuickTime too...

Heh.. now that I think about it. MPlay supports URL streaming via the command-line (DUH!), but the same MPEG-1/2 limitation applies.

Have you tried TVersity? It will transcode for you, and would make the configured URLs available for playback in MPlay.

I've not tried TVersity yet, but sounds like that might be the way to go. I know configuring VLC to do things can be sort of a hassle - at least from my experience with it.

Would there also be a way to enable entering a URL to stream from from w/in MPlay's GUI? One of the reasons for having the Photobridge is to NOT have a computer in the family room! :)
