VncSix 1.1 Released: Expanded On-Screen Keyboard

Tue Jul 05, 2005 11:58 pm

I have just released VncSix 1.1 for the 2.0.34 firmware. Download
it or find more information here:

http://frequal.com/roku/VncSix/index.html

In this version the on-screen keyboard has been expanded to include
punctuation and other characters. Now you can type in URLs, commands,
form entry fields, and the like from the convenience of the Roku
remote.

The on-screen server selection spinner from previous versions is
unchanged. If you start VncSix using the provided VncSix.roku file,
or otherwise start it without a valid server name, you will see a
spinner showing all of the available servers (those entered using
storepasswd).

The web browsing shortcuts are unchanged. These buttons on the remote
are available with the listed keys being sent to the server:

* Zoom Out: Send Page Down
* Zoom In: Send Page Up
* Menu: Bring up an on-screen keyboard. Press again to dismiss
* Rewind ("Previous"): Send Alt-Left Arrow (Back Button in Firefox)
* Fast-Forward ("Next"): Send Alt-Right Arrow (Forward Button in Firefox)
* Play/Pause: Send Alt-F4 (Close Window in most window managers)
* Info: Click the right mouse button
* Rotate: Click the middle mouse button

Remember to enter your passwords using storepasswd to get the
on-screen server selection spinner.

Any chance of supporting UltraVNC's "MS Logon" protocol?

All my servers are set up this way so that I don't need to tell people another password...they just use the same username/password that gets them access to any other resources in the domain.

Details on how it works (including source code) are at http://www.ultravnc.com/.

Is support of 24/32 bit color in the works? All my Windows boxes run this color depth and I think this is currently the most prevelent setting.

OK, My turn to look like an idiot. I've unpacked VNCSix 1.1 to a directory on my XP machine that is shared and the Roku sees it fine and runs the app, but of course there are no servers listed. Its hard to read the readme since its all one line of text, but it says to run Storepasswd on the command line but I've no idea how. On my PC, I see the storepasswd app in my shared directory but how do I run that?, via a telnet session on the roku?, in which case how do I invoke an app that is on my windows machine?.

Thanks for the link, it's interesting to see what's going on in other version of VNC. Unfortunately the priority on this is going to be very low, since I don't currently have a machine to test it with.

I would be happy to accept a patch if it were contributed. Anyone with a suitable server and the VncSix sources want to work on this?

24-bit color should work, I've tested this some. Can you force it to 24-bit color (not 32-bit)?

Full 32-bit color support is on the list (http://frequal.com/roku/VNCViewer.html) but is pretty low. For one thing, I don't think I have a suitable server setup, not sure if the Unix vncserver supports 32-bit color as a command-line option. I'll try it sometime. If so, then I can test it and fix it.

As always, the source code is available and patches are very welcome if someone implements a feature before I do.

So far, so good -- it's installed where the PB can see it.

Can you open it with WordPad, or a web browser perhaps? It has Unix end-of-line characters which notepad isn't capable of handling. Even easier you can read the home page, it has essentailly the same info:

You have to telnet to the PB and run storepasswd there. Read the "Installation" section on the home page or the readme. Look for "telnet [your-roku-ip-here]":

I like this app, it looks like it could be quite usefull to me, for spying on the wife!!!!!

But i really would like it to handle 32bit colours, my PC is used heavily and for high end graphics, so it has to be on 32 bits all the time.
Plus it would be nice to be able to see those graphics via VncSix!

Personally I think that that enhacement should be your top priority...
But then it is the only enhancement that I need at the moment

Any chance to add support for Alt-Tab so I can quickly change the active windows on the screen?

Hi,

Isn't the VNC protocol designed so that client desides what color depth is used and the client end? So this means that if you have 32bit desktop it's VNC servers responsibility to downgrade the bitmaps to 24bits before sending it to VNC client. So it does not display 32 bit graphics, but you can still share a desktop with 32bit color depth.

Actually some variants of vncviewer change color depth dynamically if the bandwidth seems to get lower/higher, server should support this.

so it's again the same ideology than with the mediarenderers vs. mediaservers; Media renderer support small set of formats and mediaserver supports media format conversion on the fly.
