Great new feature! One problem I'm having though -- when I have a DVD folder selected and press the play button on the remote, the MPlay browser shows me the contents of the DVD folder. I would expect the DVD autoselect and play to happen.

I'm guessing you mean the discrete play command? I don't have a remote with the extended remote commands, so I can't test it, but I just added support for the discrete play code. Download from the same link and give it a try. Sorry about that.

And to clarify, pressing select should enter the folder, while play and play/pause should start playback if it's recognized as a DVD folder (the Choose button becomes Play DVD) or it contains a default.MPlaylist. If it's not recognized as a DVD folder, then play and play/pause will act the same as hitting Select.

OK, found out why play or select does not work for me. Here is the command line for a .roku file that exhibits the problem:
"$SXPATH/MPlay.app" -noicons -minfilesize=300000 -browsedir=/mnt/smb/nfs/nas1/Videos /mnt/smb/nfs/nas1/Videos/video_art.MPlaylist

this one works just fine:
"$SXPATH/MPlay.app" -FixTS -nomenu -noicons -nobrowserdelete -browsedir=/mnt/smb/nfs/nas1/Videos/^movies -browseroot=/mnt/smb/nfs/nas1/Videos

info.txt file

Sun Mar 19, 2006 7:51 pm

Endless
Is there a prefered format for the info.txt file ??
I created one (only one) for my 200 ish movie collection. Initially used Textpad. It took 37 seconds for the text to display. I added <cr> <lf> with Notepad and it came down to 20 seconds.
This app just gets better and better, thank you

The info.txt is intended to be in each individual folder (same as the cover art), so if you have 200 movies, you will need 200 separate info.txt files. It should actually load faster if you use TextPad and unix format, because I don't have to remove the <cr>s before displaying the data (with windows format, the <cr>s show up as boxes in the text if I don't remove them first). At the absolute most, it should only take a second or two to display. How big is your info.txt file??

The Endless. You rule. What an awesome update. Can't wait to check it out.

I wonder if the forum members had any interest in starting to collect a set of filename.txt collection of movies so that you could just download the files for the movies you own. If you create new .txt files you can send them in somewhere. I assume that everyone would just us IMDB for the files?

If there is interest, and someone has the interest in hosting the files I'd volunteer to collect and organize the various files. Let me know if there is interest.

Drew

PS: I've never bothered to set up Viper, but is it reasonable to assume that this update pretty much replicates Vipers most valuable feature without the complicated database?

Interesting. Most of mine average around 150 bytes, since that's about all that will fit into the description area in the file browser. I'll play around with it and see if I can reproduce what you're seeing. Also, remember that some of that 3 seconds you're experiencing is due to the cover art scaling and rendering. Can you try removing the cover art jpeg temporarily and see if it makes a difference?

MPlay 20060319 seg faults if paths changed from underneath

Sun Mar 19, 2006 9:28 pm

Apparently MPlay (20060319) doesn't gracefully handle files getting changed from underneath it. Playing back a transport stream being recorded by EyeTV looks like this (the file system is an NFS mount from a Mac mini):
# ls -li /tmp/Volumes/Media/EyeTV\ Archive/Globe\ Trekker\ -\ Ultimate\ Caribbean.eyetvsched/0000000009ce59c9.mpg
 672743 -rw-r--r--    1 501      80      362001332 Mar 19 19:43 /tmp/Volumes/Media/EyeTV Archive/Globe\ Trekker\ -\ Ultimate\ Caribbean.eyetvsched/0000000009ce59c9.mpg
# ./MPlay.roku

Now, let's try to skip ahead. BTW, it's nice that MPlay syncs up to the current size of the file.

Let's try to skip to the end of the program, and get almost the live stream:
EOF

At long last, the recording has ended and EyeTV has now renamed the directory. Eventually MPlay comes to the end of the file and trying to skip back crashes the app:

The crash has an unfortunate side effect: MPlay cannot open any more streams and the HD1000 has to be rebooted.
# ./MPlay.roku
About to open /tmp/Volumes/Media/EyeTV Archive/Conan O'Brien - Finland Special.eyetv/0000000009c2c2bc.mpg
MPlay: failed to open MPEG decoder
File open failed!

Perhaps MPlay could use the inode of the file / parent directory as the reference, not the absolute path to the file at the time of initial file open.

Once we start getting more feedback from people, this feature is likely to change, so I'd probably hold off on organizing such an effort for awhile.

No, I wouldn't say that at all. Viper is a much more advanced browser, with genre browsing and extensive details for each video. The new feature in MPlay is essentially just the addition of a large tiled icon view to the file browser with the ability to display the text from a file in the folder. It may get more advanced as we receive feedback, but I don't really intend for it to ever become as detailed as something like Viper.

I renamed my art images to .tmn and the response became sub 1 second, so it looks to me like it is rendering and interpreting the length of the text that causes the delay

Hey Endless - you rock. Keep up the great work.
I went out and bought another HD1000 mostly to do DVD playback using MPlay!

Quick question:

Is there anyway to make the default view the large icon view (command line switch or setup option maybe)?

Thanks!
Jeff

I had the same question, and found the answer on the MPlay web site - there is a new command line switch:
-largeicons

I never looked at the command lne options before. There are a few there that are really usefull. How do you add multiple command line optins to the mplay.roku file? Do you just seperate them with commas?

Thanks
