My Dream Roku Machine

Thu May 22, 2008 8:50 pm

I am a new owner of a Soundbridge, and I am love with the thing. It is simple to use, works well, everything I could want in a network MP3 player.

Here is my fantasy Roku machine:

Take the SoundBridge. Combine with the Netflix box. Add ability to decode video streams sent from my local network, like MediaMVP.

*Internet radio
*Streamed MP3
*Streamed MPEG, DivX, etc.
*Downloaded Netflix
*Downloaded Unbox
*YouTube, Break, other Flash based services
*Photo slideshows
*On board display for MP3, text info
*TV display for video, graphical browsing of music library
*TV display shows album art when MP3 is streaming

I'm with you on this one ... even if it "only" supported Amazon's unbox for streaming as far as movies for purchase. CEO Jeff Bezos referred to unbox streaming this morning (5/28 - see TechCrunch for details).

I suspect Netflix will try to maintain the single-box configuration to eliminate competition, but consumers will reach saturation with too many set top boxes. A Roku "Convergence Box" would find its place in my AV stack immediately if it could handle my music like my Soundbridge, my pictures, my video files, etc., and do it all from attached storage devices on the network like the Soundbridge can!
