Compilations - again

Thu Sep 01, 2005 1:38 pm

It is annoying that SB doesn't recognize the compilation flag set by iTunes and I have understood that it isn't made available by iTunes.

But... my earlier suggestion about being able to browse smart playlists would easily solve that (and many other things). Just create one smart playlist that excludes compilations and create one that only contains them and you would be all set.

Is there a technical issue regarding being able to browse smart playlists or have I misunderstood something?

Great idea. The way compilations are handled is my biggest issue with the SoundBridge and, while this is a workaround rather than a fix, I would be willing to use it as an acceptable way 'round the problem.

You can specify compilation folders in TwonkyVision and it then automatically shows these as artist Various no matter what is actually in the id3 tag. Not sure if this is something like what you are after.

With mt-daapd you can do:
# sqlite /var/cache/mt-daapd/songs.db
sqlite> UPDATE songs SET artist='Various Artists' WHERE  compilation='1';
sqlite> .exit

if your mp3 have the iTunes Compilations-Tag set,
or if you've got your compilations in a specific path (e.g. /mp3/Sampler/):
sqlite> UPDATE songs SET artist='Various Artists' WHERE path LIKE '%Sampler%';

This is not really what I want. I might solve the problem and it's very easy to do with iTunues but I want to keep artist names!

Has Apple made any changes in how iTunes 5 sharing works? Maybe SoundBridge will be able to implement more cool stuff for using with iTunes 5 sharing?

If you do this, what do you get displayed, during playback, as the artist? If this were to show the correct artist when the track is being played, I might upgrade to an sqlite version of mt-daapd...
