Nokia 770/N8x0/N900 remote display/control for Soundbridge

Fri Sep 21, 2007 6:36 am

Hi,

Today I put up a program I wrote for the Nokia Internet Tablet (770/N800/N810/N900-OS2006/OS2007/OS2008/Maemo 5 supported) that allows remote display and control for M500s (control only), M1000s, M2000s and R1000s. This differs from the Media Player that currently exists for the Internet Tablets in that my program scrapes the screen and sends commands as if the remote were used. This allows me to start and stop the application without affecting the Soundbridge.

It's at http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/tabletbridge/.

This is my first tablet program, my first GTK program and my first sockets program. Feedback and patches are welcome.

thanks,
Frank

Hi Frank,

thats very nice.

Many thanks for this app!

In my opinion it would be nice to integrate the browse-commands like:

CK_BROWSE_ARTISTS
CK_BROWSE_ALBUMS
CK_BROWSE_GENRES
etc.

PS: for missing libaux0 see here for how to install the library:

Hi Twister,

Good idea, when I get the buttons converted from text to bitmaps, I'll have room to add the additional buttons you've suggested.

What's the comment about libaux0? Did you have to add that to get the application to run or something?

thanks,
Frank

Hi,

I put up TabletBridge version 0.1.1 yesterday. I improved the handling of the network connection.

Hi Frank,

Is there a way to install this application on a n800 running OS2008? I have tried, however, I received an error indicating that a number of application packages are missing.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for the TabletBridge app, I use it to remote my SBR1000, the buttons work great, but I don't get anything from the screen, is there anyway to get this functioning on the SBR as well as your M1000?

Regards,
Ant.

Hi Trapper,

Not yet. I have a 770 that can't run OS2008. I'm planning on getting a N810 soon so TabletBridge will run on OS2008 soon.

I do have verification that TabletBridge will run on the N800 with OS2007.

BTW, 0.1.2 is out, a few fixes and now sockets timeout.

TabletBridge doesn't currently work with R1000s, I don't have that model. If I get a Radio in the future I'll add support.

0.2.0 is out. R1000 compatibility is there as well as automatically finding Soundbridge devices on the network. Plus some bug fixing.

This is very interesting. I have two M500s, and for a long time have been wondering what to do about the display. My eyes can't zoom in like they used to! While I thought about jumping ship to get a Squeezebox, they are still overpriced in my mind. An M1001 is out for me, because of the upsampling.

I have an older PocketPC that I sometimes use with VisualMR, but it's non-WPA so no-longer allowed on my network. I'm considering an n800.

What would be REALLY cool is if the Nokia plus this application could be a high-tech display AND a remote, depending on my mood. Could your application be used as a high-quality display (to mimic smooth scrolling, large fonts, etc on a VFD) for distance viewing, while I use the old SoundBridge remote as a controller? (and use the Nokia as a controller should I decide to pick it up)

To my knowledge (someone correct me if I'm wrong), the M500 does not make it's display information available in any shape or form.

Now, one option you do have is to just have the M500 as a UPnP client that is then controlled by the Nokia. If you've used Cidero, you know what I mean. The Media Streamer application that runs on the Nokia will perform this task. It finds UPnP servers and UPnP clients. Then you can control the playlist with the Nokia. You'll be able to see what's playing along with album art. The downside of this approach in my opinion is that 1) the nokia must be on while the M500 is playing. 2) You can't play the Internet Radio stations that are natively supported by the M500.

Another option you have is to get a refurbished M1000, no upsampling.

Awesome work, thanks for sharing!
It's working like a charm on my N810.

One question though: Would it be possible to connect to the first SoundBridge by default?

Hi fizze,

I've considered that option. It's a great idea. I think for that though, I'll need a preference of some kind so users can turn it on and off.

0.2.3 is out. This release fixes a bug in scanning that could result in only one Soundbridge being found.
