iTunes (Windows) Play Count updater! [NEW VERSION: 2.2]

Tue Jan 31, 2006 4:19 pm

Now at version 2.2 - please see the later post in the topic for details...

I am pleased to announce the release of "Roku / iTunes Track Counter".

This is a solution for those running iTunes as a Music Server on Windows, who wish to have the "Play Count" and "Last Played" fields updated by what's being played by the SoundBridge.

Current feature list:
  • Connects to any Roku SoundBridge model
  • Interrogates the SoundBridge using its own web interface
  • Polls the SoundBridge every 3 minutes (configurable)
  • Updates the iTunes Play Count and Last Played values for the currently playing track
  • Displays the details of the currently playing track
  • Minimizes to the System Tray to reduce desktop clutter
  • Built using Microsoft .Net Framework v1.1
  • Note that the Roku / iTunes Track Counter behaves differently to the way that iTunes does: iTunes will only update the track Play Count when the track has finished playing; The Roku / iTunes Track Counter will update the Play Count if the SoundBridge is playing the track when it is polled, and wasn't playing the track the last time it was polled.

Anyway, if you are interested in trying it, then you can download the 83KB zip file from http://www.foghornlimited.net/RokuTrackCounter.html

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Checklist:
iTunes running?
Track Counter running on same computer as iTunes?
SoundBridge playing music from the iTunes server?
The Track Counter running:
a) you have entered your SoundBridge's IP in the address box (keep the rest of the URL there - e.g. mine is http://192.168.0.39/SoundBridgeNP.html)
b) you have pressed "Start"?

What does the "SoundBridge status" show?

Followed everything correctly I think.

SoundBridge status: Unknown (Track Counter Not Running)

Do I need to be running 2.5 beta?

Does the dll file need to be with the others in the itunes folder. I tried that and got same message.

Thanks again for your help.

If you have "SoundBridge status: Unknown (Track Counter Not Running)" then it suggests that you have not clicked the "Start" button... (or that there is a bug in my code ;))

What URL have you got in the "SoundBridge address" box? If you put that URL in a browser, do you get a web page returned that shows what's currently playing on your SoundBridge?

Cragar, I think the fault is mine...

I am going to revert my SB to the latest release firmware and test it using that... I will hopefully post a fix tonight.

OK, I can't fix this tonight. Dang Netgear router not playing ball. :(

For now, the program will only work with the 2.5 beta firmware. Sorry about that.

As soon as I can get a fix for the current live firmware (v2.3) I'll put it up.

No big deal. Thanks for all your work though. 2.5 shouldn't be far off.

Any chance of updating this to work with multiple Rokus? I have two, and will shortly have three :-)

I think that for now you could run the program for each SB you have... you will then have that many icons in the system tray.

I will look into support for multiple SBs though... thanks for the suggestion!

Can't get it to work...

Sat Feb 04, 2006 3:34 am

I can't get it to work either. The application says "Unable to connect", but I can load the "Now playing" link in both Firefox and IE.

I am running W2k Server SP4, iTunes 6.0.1.3 and SB 2.5.88. I have tried to connect to a SB R1000 and a SB M1000 with no luck.

Any suggestions?

In case some of you are interested in another application that does iTunes Play Count Update, check out iBridge. It allows full control of the SB as well as updating play count.

Requires 2.5 beta to work correctly.

Tomas, I've PM-ed you... I will investigate and see what can be done.

Thanks.
