Green thing Hangin between 19.5 and 9.5 Volts

Tue Dec 06, 2011 11:01 am

Background: radio works for 2 years, starts to work only intermittently, flashing display.
eventually dies completely

I took it apart and there is a green leaded part I measured as a resistor of around 50 Ohms that was badly burnt that was jumping between the 19.5 V and 9.5 V supply at the molex power connector going to the main board. On a separate power up of the supply, which looked like perhaps a few things might have burn up, the 9.5 V was ok but the 19.5V was at 30V. Sure enough the radio still works when biased separately from a D.C. pwr supply so I'm going with chucking the whole supply mess and putting an external wall wart with a smaller internal regulator to get to 9.5 V.

Does anyone know the history / purpose of this green thing? I want to remove it. Maybe it was a diode that burn up? I can't tell, the whole molex connector and shrink wrap was dramatically heat damaged.... Any of these things catch on fire yet?

I have exactly the same problem. Assuming it becomes a non-issue if I take the same approach as others and replace the internal PSU with an external unit.

When I added the V7809-1000 to my radios, I removed the 50 ohm resistor. No ill effects so far.

Many thanks Frank. I couldn't work out if it was resistor or diode - too fried!
Will do the same.
