Hi Pascal, welcome to the forums.

Not sure why you can't install firefly for your Mac but certainly we'll get you up and running.

Can I suggest you download the Mac version of Firefly here:

http://nightlies.fireflymediaserver.org/version.php?version=svn-1586

it's the second one down in that list below the Windows installer. Once you've downloaded, run the stop & uninstall scripts first and then double click the Firefly.pref Pane icon to install. Follow any instructions and let us know whether you're now up and running. If not we'll take it from there.

Two things to bear in mind - when Firefly gives itself a name - 'Firefly on Pascal's iMac' or something similar, shorten that name to something like just 'Firefly' or 'Firefly on Mac' as there is a bug with excessively long names. Second, when you first start the server you may find it 'hangs' on startup. Again this is a known bug. Just let it run for a few minutes (4 or 5), then stop & restart the server and it should run fine.

Cheers Andy

problems with FireFly setup

Sat Jan 31, 2009 6:48 am

I followed andyg's very clear suggestions to setup Firefly on my mac (MacMini-OS 10.4.11) and have Firefly version 1586 running. It scans the directories I nominate to find all the corresponding FLAC files. On my soundbridge (M1001) which I believe is running version 3+ firmware, I can see my Firefly server and the songs have a "x" beside them and also when I try to play them I get the message "File format not supported" (something like that, am not in front of the soundbridge currently).

Any ideas on a fix would be much appreciated.

Best,

Sam

Hi Sam,

does this happen with all your FLAC files or only some? If it's only some then it may come down to accents, umlauts and so on. IIRC Firefly can get hung up on stuff like that and if that's the case you'll need to modify those file names. FWIW I use xACT and/or Tag for entering the metadata in my FLAC files.

Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy,

The file names do not contain any disallowed characters. I am able to get Firefly working on the Soundbridge for other supported filetypes that are read by Itunes. I have added .flac as one of the allowed extension in the Firefly configuration panel. I have not been able to get ANY *flac files to work with the soundbridge. The error being the same as previously reported (File type not supported). I have tried creating flac files using either xACT or Max with the same non-functioning result. Also have tried this on a MacMini (intel core duo processor) and MacBook Pro with the same result.

Any ideas? I guess I could rip to *wav and have those imported into Itunes however files sizes are much bigger and it seems like Firefly should support flac.

Cheers,

Sam

Hi Sam,

can you PM me an email address and I'll send a flac file for you to try. I'm not sure why you're having this problem given you've added the extension in firefly and have used the same s/w as I do but lets try it on a track I know to be working and see where they gets you.

Hi Andy,

Thank you for the (flac) file that I received intact. The file could be played without any problem using VLC. I did a re-scan with Firefly and the file was detected but still did not play. Again the Soundbridge reported "This music format is not supported".

The soundbridge seems to detect all my and now yours flac files but shows them with an "x" besides using Firefly svn-1586.

Best,

Sam

Again the Soundbridge reported "This music format is not supported".

A long time ago, before I got my NSLU2, I remember wishing that Flac would get supported for OS X users of firefly... and then of course I went the slug route and forgot that crucial piece of info since I was no longer streaming my music off the Mac...

So I've been scratching my head trying to figure why my Flacs work fine off the slug but not on my Mac, and of course it's plain to see in the config file:

# Valid codectypes:
#
# mp4a - for AAC (.aac, .mp4, .m4a, .m4p)
# mpeg - for mp3
# wav - for wav
# wma - for wma
# ogg - for ogg
# flac - for flac (.flac, .fla)
# mpc for musepack (.mpc, .mpp, .mp+)
# alac for alac (.m4a)
#
#NOTE: 1.0b3 of the Mac server does not have support for transcoding
# Ogg and FLAC.  Stay tuned

and unfortunately I don't think flac support for Macs ever did happen. (That snippet is from the 1696 config file.) So, unless someone proves me wrong, I'm sorry to say Sam that you'll need to convert your Flacs to Apple Lossless or similar... or go the NAS route and bypass the Mac altogether. (EDIT: or use a server s/w that does support Flac for OSX)

Andy: Many thanks. You confirmed my frustration in trying to get it to work. But as you say there are other (non-FLAC) solutions which are not a hardship since I hadn't committed to encoding to FLAC.

I just recently grabbed svn-1696 for Mac, and installed it on my Mac Pro running 10.5.7.

For me, it seems to actually hang forever on "Firefly is starting..." message. I've waited hours even, and restarted it, and it still doesn't come back up.

I certainly see several errors in the log, but nothing seems fatal. Any ideas why it wouldn't be working, or is there anything else I can try?

Well, on the log file you have, it would seem that firefly has scanned your library - or most of it. I'd hazard a guess that it probably doesn't like the length of the paths to the tracks that it's passed on. But as to why it's hanging ad infinitum...

Remove those long-path files folders from your library for test purposes.

I'd be inclined to uninstall and reinstall firefly. Worth reinstalling with svn1586 which is stable as a rock (bar the known bugs).

Did you install for just 'this user' or 'all users'? Again, I'd be inclined to limit it to the single user (admin) in the first instance.

Also change the debug level to 9 and see if anything relevant turns up. The config file is in /users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Firefly - firefly.conf (I'm assuming you can't yet access the web config page via bonjour?)

If it still hangs post back. And be detailed as to exactly your install process & where the music is stored & firefly's path to that music folder.

I followed andyg's very clear suggestions to setup Firefly on my mac (MacMini-OS 10.4.11) and have Firefly version 1586 running. It scans the directories I nominate to find all the corresponding FLAC files. On my soundbridge (M1001) which I believe is running version 3+ firmware, I can see my Firefly server and the songs have a "x" beside them and also when I try to play them I get the message "File format not supported" (something like that, am not in front of the soundbridge currently).

nitts12: as per somewhere earlier in the thread you'll see that FLACs were not currently supported on the Mac at the time 1586 & 1696 were released which is also unfortunately the time that active development of Firefly effectively ceased. Bottom line - you cannot play FLAC files off a Mac to your Soundbridge via Firefly without much mucking around and no guarantees even then.

http://forums.fireflymediaserver.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7353

Since I stream firefly off a NSLU2 which can handle FLAC files it's not something I was going to waste too much time on & I gave up pursuing it.
