HD1000 dead, what to buy?

Fri Jul 28, 2006 5:12 pm

I have been waiting to buy an HD1K for 18 months... I really lost track of what is out there... Now that it is dead I am looking for suggestions :)

I would like to stream music, movies (DVD rips, DIVX) and pics to the TV.

I am sure that this post may be up for deletion sooner or later, after all it is soliciting suggestions of competing products. I ask for it not to be. It seems that it will be the decent thing to do after leading myself and a lot of other people on for so long. Just a month ago I was told I was put a "list" of people to get a call about an HD1K "soon, when they start coming in..."

Thanks,
Ron.

Well - since the HD1000 is now a dead product I don't have any bones about suggesting that you look into getting a modded Xbox and install XBMC.

That's what I've done and it's BY FAR the best solution out there for what you're trying to do. Not only is the best solution out there, it will simply amaze you and likely exceed your expectations.

If you like to tinker with things then this is also a great gadget to play with as you can customize almost every aspect of it.

FWIW - I also own an HD1000 and used it loyally for quite a while.

XBMC is a great solution alright, but theres two things to watch out for.

1) The Xbox is not exactly what one would call 'silent', fan noise is not pleasant
2) Not able to do hidef TS files

I didn't think that the XBOX was HD. Does it even have a component interface?

Nor will XBOX360 have a HDDVD reader. PS3 will have integrated BluRay reader, but MSoft has said HD capability will be an add-on peripheral for 360. PLUS, XBOX360 doesn't have the capability for digital video output (neither DVI nor HDMI). I'm sure Sony will disappoint with PS3 though too, although for the price it better practically wash the dishes and do the laundry.

Yes, take a look at the Zensonic Z500. But its very expensive!

a different product would be

Slim Devices' Transporter

But also this is very expensive and will be able to stream music only (no pictures nor any movies).

happy hunting

Thus it would appear to me that the "Slim Devices' Transporter" would be a replacement for the soundbridge, and not the photobridge. If you want an audio solution, I personally highly recommend the sonos system. Personally, I frequent this part of the forum for video solutions... specifically high resolution photos.
