Radio station updates

Wed Nov 17, 2010 6:45 am

Is there a scheduled day or something when updates are done, or is it just whenever a volunteer gets to it?
Yes, I understand that they are volunteers and the system isn't so easy to use.
I made a bunch of updates 6 days ago, so I'm just wondering if there is some time to expect the updates or not.

A)
Kol Hamizrach can be deleted... this was a webcast of a non-licensed radio broadcaster, and the radio station shut down quite a while ago.
http://www.rokuradio.com/stationdetail.php?sid=27774

B)
I was looking at updating one of the radio stations which someone put in the Israel section, but it doesn't seem to be in Israel:
http://www.rokuradio.com/stationdetail.php?sid=29640
It's labeled on their website as "Radio Soul of the Caucuses" (using Google Language Tools) and the domain is registered in Russia.
http://www.whois.net/whois/kavkazportal.com

C) Mostly Music Cantorial
Has been off the air for a long time and can also be deleted.
http://www.rokuradio.com/stationdetail.php?sid=33389

D) Radio Zs.. The hostwebsite no longer has the link to audio (it's a generic news website, which had the link) and I can't find a replacement website - if one exists (good thing for Google language tools):
http://www.rokuradio.com/stationdetail.php?sid=22590

E) Radio Kavana and Torah Chat Radio have active websites, but neither of their audio feeds have worked on their websites for a while.
I'll try to contact them to see what's up, before asking to delete.

Thanks

No, there isn't.

Yes, it is. Actually Radio Roku only has one volunteer moderator (FrankB in these forums) so it may take several days until submissions are processed.

Has it been that long since I processed updates? Sorry. I've been distracted with other projects. I should be able to go through the submissions tonight.

Thanks for taking the time to submit them.

Thanks! Looks good!

BTW, do you know how to properly get a URL from Shoutcast? When I tried over a year ago, the URLs which I chose, seemed to be temporary URLs.
I haven't tried recently.

Like all URLs from Radio Roku's competitors the audio links in the Shoutcast directory indeed tend to be temporary. URLs starting with "yp" ("Yellow Pages") definitely are and should not expected to be reliable over a longer period of time.

Furthermore stream URLs derived from other radio portals (for example vTuner, RadioTIme, Shoutcast, Goldmusic, Surfmusic, iTunes) should not be submitted to Radio Roku unless they are explicitly offered to the public on a station's website (please see http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=15642).

I didn't realize that "shoutcast" was in that category...I just knew that they hosted many webstreams.

Thanks

That's a common misunderstanding, but Shoutcast does not host streams.

First and foremost Shoutcast is a streaming media server software ("Shoutcast DNAS") produced by Nullsoft, a division of AOL, and used by commercial stream hosters and also individuals.

Related to this software is the Shoutcast directory where Shoutcast servers can automatically publish information about their streams.

Sometimes you will find audio URLs of the type "http://shoutcast.domain.tld" (for example http://shoutcast.omroep.nl:8078/listen.pls). These URLs are not related to Shoutcast, but are subdomains of "domain.tld" (for example "omroep.nl") for the station's streaming server. The name usually (but not always) designates a Shoutcast server.

Most of the above also applies to Icecast, another streaming server software with a radio station directory.

More to delete:
Mabat - unfortunately, the URL shown on the official website, already has the date included...It must be created on the server side.
The other websites which have Mabat streaming URLs, all have the old URL, which doesn't work.

Unfortunately, Torah Chat Radio hasn't worked in ages and I tried contacting them.

While CJRS 1650 Montreal is valid (I just had the stream URL changed to a good one), here are some comments regarding:
CJRS 1510 AM Montreal, QC
http://www.rokuradio.com/stationdetail.php?sid=6176
points to:
http://www.cjrsradio.com/

This is now Internet only. I don't speak French and Google translate doesn't seem to work. I see requests for donations and links for Nokia, I don't see a regular stream URL. Maybe someone who speaks French knows.

CJRS 1510 (Station ID 6176) is a so-called "Zombie Station" within Radio Roku. It has been deleted from the database but still is visible on the SoundBridge and in certain parts of Radio Roku. It doesn't work, though, as it's empty and can neither be revived nor edited.

According to the website listening to CJRS Radio requires a registration and authentication.

If I search for CJRS on my Soundbridge, I get both of the CJRSes... even the "Zombie CJRS 1510"

By the way, it seems that the Torah Chat Network at this point still exists as a two way audio web classroom, but no streaming radio.

You will see CJRS 1510 on the SoundBridge and you will find its details in Radio Roku, but it won't play. Have a look at http://www.radioroku.com/addstream.php?id=6176 to learn why this is called a "Zombie" (there are more than 2,000 of such stations in Radio Roku).

Sorry, I must have missed removing the old CJRS. It's gone now. If you have a list of stations dupondt, feel free to mail it to me. You throw out numbers often enough to make me think you might.

thanks,
Frank

I don't have a list because I gave up scanning for "zombies" when I realised that a certain administrator named RokuTed didn't give a flower if I sent him the info or not.

However, you can easily check the numbers yourself. "All Streams" in Radio Roku will list 10,774 stations at the moment. http://www.radioroku.com/services/browse_stations.php will list 12.938.
