Can we have a new genre please ?

Mon Jan 05, 2009 2:27 am

'Talk- Progressive' is already one of the genres. Can we please have "Talk- Conservative' as a genre as well ?

According to precisely where you live, I am of the viewpoint that such descriptions truly do have a totally different connotation -

As a volunteer moderator for Radio Roku I have actually received abusive PMs from users who failed to accept such 'approved' genres.

So ? In the UK 'conservative' may be a dirty word. However, 'progressive' is a dirty word as well to many. Anyways, over in North America, 'conservative' ain't so bad. But this is no reason to fail to categorize a certain viewpoint. If 'conservative' bothers you, then how about 'Talk- Right-wing' ? Let's do this now.

sbroddy,

and who will decide if a station is "progressive", "conservative", "right-wing", "left-wing" or whatever you prefer as genres? In the end it would be up to me to do it, and from what you have written I think that my understanding of "conservative" might very much differ from yours.

Genre descriptions containing judgmental adjectives thus are neither practical nor meaningful, so like Alan I never have liked them.

Now I am confused. Mr. dumontp, you listed in your reply that 'progressive' is a judgemental label, so you wouldn't use it. But, it already is one of the RadioRoku Talk categories. So, what gives ? So, if 'Progressive' is allowed, why wouldn't 'Conservative' be allowed ? 'Progressive' in North American lingo basically means liberal, free-thinking, open-minded, democratic (as in Democratic Party, which is the main left-wing, liberal political party in the United States), which are all judgemental labels. Now, I know that the Sirius and XM satellite radio providers in the US categorize political talk channels into 'Right' talk and 'Left' talk. Maybe this is what can be done here.

Hello Mr. dupondt. Sorry for misspelling your handle. But further to my latest reply, if it comes down to this, get rid of the currently existing category 'Talk- Progressive' which certainly denotes liberal, left-wing political thinking in the US and Canada and just have a 'Talk- Political' category. But hopefully, it shouldn't have to come to this. I'm beginning to sense that in Europe that 'Right' and 'Left' are hate terms and this is why there is reluctance on the part of moderators in Europe to change in this regard. In North America we don't hate those who disagree with us- we would much rather just have opponents change, but we woudn't hate them if they didn't.

Mr. sbroddy,

over here in Europe, "right" and "left" are by no means "hate terms". These attributes simply reflect the fact that traditionally the more or less "conservative" parties have their seats on the right wing of the parliament, whereas the "socialists" and/or "social democrats" sit on the left side (always viewed from the seat of what you would call the "Speaker" which we call the "President of the Parliament").

According to the viewpoint of most Europeans, the Democratic Party of the United States would not be considered a left-wing or liberal party at all.

Over here in Europe "liberal" designates something completely different from "left-wing" or "progressive".

"Talk-Progressive" was introduced as a genre when Radio Roku was started. Personally I have never assigned that attribute to a station, but have not removed it when it was attributed to an approved station.

In addition to what I stated in my earlier post I have never liked the idea of having sub-genres such as "Talk-News", "Rock-Classic" or "Electronica-Dance/DJ".

Finally: As the volunteer moderators do not have the privileges to add Genres, Languages or Countries to the Radio Roku database the decision to introduce a new Genre is exclusively made by Roku.

Can we have a new genre please ?

Dear Mr. dumontp,
I didn't know I was going to the wrong place to pursue this matter. Anyways, the discussion was very interesting. I agree that in parliementary chambers right and left make sense and US chambers of lawmakers have bipartisan seating, hence right and left don't make sense there. But generally speaking, right and left denote Republican and Democrat.

Where do I go next to pursue this further ?

Thanks again,
sbroddy

Wouldn't

devnull@linux.org

be as efficient? I mean seeing that the Rokus are end of lifetime and the company couldn't care less?

Just to be fair, not that he invests some time or hope into it...
