YouTube performance on Roku Express

Tue Mar 14, 2017 7:06 am

Can anybody comment on how YouTube performs on the Roku Express?  I'm thinking about buying one, and it would be used almost exclusively for YouTube.  For reference, it would be replacing a 2XS (model from 2011) which performs terribly on YouTube, and reboots with increasing frequency.

he express is as good with youtube as any other Roku model ... that said the official youtube app is not the best to begin with and there are alternatives out there that do a much better job -- my opinion

Knuckle, I wouldn't call the YT performance comparable across the Roku platform. My 2 XS is unusable due to button press lag, as well as occasional crashing the Roku itself. My TV is usable, but it also suffers badly from button lag if pausing or fast forwarding. My Stick is even better, with some lagging. However, my Ultra and 4 work flawlessly in all aspects. My feeling is YT has designed their app for the most powerful boxes, and the lesser powered boxes are stuck with the lagging issues. Since I've never used an Express, I can't say how it might work in comparison. Looking at the hardware specs, the Express looks to be about the same as my Stick. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roku

This is what I'm experiencing - the button press lag is irritating but you can somewhat get used to it.  The rebooting is a real hassle, and it seems to be happening more frequently; this is the reason I'm considering a new box. If anybody has tried the Express I'd be eager to hear what they think (especially about YouTube performance).  The low price point is enticing but I'm worried it could be slow - YouTube seems to be a resource hog (all other channels work fine on the old 2XS) and I'd like to confirm that the express can handle it.

I assume that you mean that performance on the Express is as good as on any other CURRENT model, right?  Obviously it's crap on old equipment like 2XS.  I'm interested in these alternatives though; I didn't know that there are still unofficial YouTube apps ... what are the best ones?

YouTube works fine on my Roku Express Plus.

I can post a video if you want but I'm not sure how to do that

No need to post a video, I'll take your word for it :)
