Roku 8.0 software issues

Thu Nov 02, 2017 8:47 am

Got the capability to manually update to 8.0 this early AM, and have had zero problems so far. (Albeit others have: here and here and here.)

I am pleased to report no more "snap-crackle-pop" in Plex (as of yet), and that the problem introduced in firmware 7.7 of TheEndless' iTunes Podcasts channel being unable to properly resume play of a previously-paused podcast seems to have been fixed. (If you paused an audio podcast, exited the channel, then returned to the podcast later, it wouldn't immediately resume where it left off, but instead excruciatingly played silently from the beginning until it hit the previously-paused spot before resuming.... Ignore my first post in that thread, which cleared-up with firmware 7.6)

Got 8.0-4108 on my express+ 3710. Everything seems to work well except for private listening on my old Android phone ( Moto X xt1060) using 5.1.1 which occurs on YouTube at the start of every video. Sound stutters for 30 second or so. I don't remember this happening with 7.7 Roku OS.

I have a Roku 3500X stick and an older VISIO TV.  The TV is capable of 1080 and the Roku Stick would display that just fine with firmware 7.7.  Did the upgrade to firmware 8.0 and everything appeared to function normally BUT the TV would consistently display only 720.  I went into the Display Properties on the stick and choose both "auto" and "1080" and in both cases the stick would display 1080 for a short period of time and then revert to 720.

Rolled back to 7.7 firmware and didn't have the problem.  Upgraded again to 8.0 and the problem is back.

For now, rolled it back to 7.7 and hopefully Roku will figure out what is happening in the near future . . .

I'm seeing essentially the same issue with my two Roku 2's (4210x) as described in a separate topic posted earlier.  They will hold at 1080p until the TVs are turned off and back on when they only display 720p. Thankfully this is not happening with the Roku Premiere hooked to my 65" 4K TV :-).

My issue is playing video from usb port of modem/router to Roku Media Player.  The video (mp4 and mkv) doesn't play at all. It freezes on "Retrieving"

Channel used: Roku Media Player version 4.1.1544
Model: 4210X version 8.0.0.4108
Connection: Ethernet, Wifi
USB Format: NTFS, FAT

I am also seeing the problem of reverting from 1080 to 720 from the screensaver, on a Roku 3.

Now after a couple of days heavy use, I'm starting to notice that although the jerky navigation scrolling across horizontal rows of video icons introduced in firmware 7.6—and significantly reduced to acceptable in 7.7—continues to be acceptable in 8.0 (and almost back to the normal, snappy scrolling of 7.5),... but the associated problem (in the second paragraph of the aforementioned link) is somewhat reduced: now gone completely in some channels, but still present in others. ("After you play a video in a channel's row of horizontal video icon choices (or just enter a video's details screen and immediately exit back out to the horizontal list), it often, but not always, loses its place, and you're on the icon of another video elsewhere in the horizontal list, sometimes the one beside the video you were in, other times several icons away. Makes it real hard to remember where you were when you're rapidly browsing the details screens along a row.")

In the Weather Underground channel, the selected Radar or Satellite thumbnail preview on the main screen is displaced to the upper-left corner of the screen. (But they display correctly when selected for full-screen view.)

I have a Roku Premier+ and a Samsung HDTV. Manually updated to 8.0 last week.
I also noticed the Weather Underground problem as described.

Immediately after the update, I started receiving HDCP errors on selecting YouTube videos. Flashes for a second on start, then plays normally. So far, only happens with YouTube.  I did a hot-swap of the cable, but no change.

I'm having the same issue with a Roku 3 and a 1080p Sony TV.  The TV displays 1080p until it's turned off.  When I turn the TV back on, it's displaying in 720p but the Roku display type setting still shows 1080p.  I'm having to reset the Roku display type setting every time I turn the TV on.

Same problem except mine is going from 2160 back to 1080P.

Won't hold the resolution settings for some reason.  I'm back to V 7 and it holds the 2160.

V8 has a problem.

Manually installed the 8.0 update on my Roku 3 last night and afterward immediately noticed the stuttering when scrolling on Yahoo and other channels, which I never experienced with 7.7. Rather than see if there's any other problems, I reverted to v7.7 which scrolls smoothly. Its obvious there are many bugs with this first build much as there were with 7.7. Please test more thoroughly before releasing for hardware Roku.

I don't see this on my Roku. So could be specific to certain TVs or AVRs?

Anyone with the 1080 -> 720 issue (or higher resolution to lower resolutions), please post your serial number/DeviceID (Settings > System > About).
