[Official] 2018 Fall Launch - Roku Ultra + JBL Headphones Feedback

With the 2018 release of the new Roku Ultra and the JBL Headphones, we would like to consolidate consolidate all commentary to a single thread.

Off topic comments will be deleted to keep things concise and on point.

Shawn, can you please expand on what the exact difference is between the 2017 Ultra 4660 and 2018 Ultra 4661 that warrants calling it "new"? Has any of the fundamental hardware changed, or is it merely the same device newly bundled with the JBL headphones (and updated firmware, of course)?

I've tried to get clarification from Roku by trying to contact Customer Service and even submitted a support request. I just purchased 2 Ultra 4660R's just over 10 days ago and ask to know what the difference is. Especially the fact that I paid full price on both of them.
If this is a small change, headphones only, than it would be nice to know. The lack of support and communication makes me want to return them and move past Roku all together.

The Roku Ultra is identical but the player now includes premium JBL headphones for private listening and new remote finder sounds (including the Game of Thrones theme song).

Thanks...how does it compare with an Ultra 4640x (Unknown year)? Been loving the 4K performance, especially the occasional HDR source.

The 4640 (2016) has a few hardware changes compared to the newer versions of the Ultra. It has a Dolby Digital decoder built in, which no other Roku has. It has an optical out jack, and has double the channel memory (1GB vs 512 MB). Other than that, they are the same box.

So still no Dolby Vision then?

On 10-7-2018 I picked up a Ultra at a local Walmart. I bought it because it was a "new" 4661 model. The box is marked  - SKU# 4661RW - LOT# 2189030962 - bar code 8 29610 00301 6

I was surprised when I looked at the bottom of the unit and saw a model # of 4660X2 - and - FCC TC21016 stamped into it.

What gives? I bought the thing as the "all new and improved 2018 model" that you hype. How in the world did it get mis-packaged and what do I do about it????? The Walmart has sold the other one they had off of the shelf so there is no swapping it out with them - IF the other one they had was even properly packaged....

What do we do to solve this problem????

What problem? You didn't say a thing about the headphones - did you get them? It's stated above that the unit itself hasn't changed, and where did you get that quote that it's an "all new and improved 2018 model?" Their press release doesn't say anything like that:

"The company also announced updates to its ultimate streaming player, the Roku Ultra which now features premium JBL headphones..."

They are the same device, as stated in this earlier response in this very thread:

I'm sure Walmart would take it back if you choose that route.

I had the same issue. I bought one from Best Buy, it says 4661 on the box, but when you look on the bottom of the unit it says 4660x2. I realize they are the same box as far as performance but the 4661 is also supposed to have operating system 9, and 2 new remote finder sounds and mine does not have either of those. I bought one directly from Roku yesterday and it got here at my house today and it's the same deal with this unit as well. Am I missing something, is there going to be a firmware update so you can get operating system 9 and the two new remote finder sounds?

is Roku shipping the wrong boxes?I do have the JBL headphones but like I said I don't have the two new remote finder sounds and its operating on 8.1 operating system as well.

To my understanding, OS9 is still in beta testing, so I'm not surprised they are shipping the new Ultra with 8. But yes, it will be a download when available.

Will the remote finder sounds be a download as well?  I realize it's not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things, but it's sort of the principle of the thing you know.  I paid for a certain product, and that's what I should get right?

My bad, I just read in the official press release that the 2 new remote finder sounds will not be available till November.  Just my 2 cents, but I think roku should have stamped the bottom of the units with 4661.  It's just confusing to people when you have 4661 stamped on the box, and then you look at the actual unit and it says 4660x2.

I agree. If they are selling it as a specific model number, that's what should be on the label. Perhaps it shows the correct model number in the about menu. As far as the finder sounds, I believe they are part of OS9. So when 9 is released the tones should be there. Now we need to know which models the sounds will be available in. Will my older Ultra have them? Inquiring minds want to know!
