How do I disable ads on my homescreen?

Tue Jan 08, 2019 3:11 pm

Hello, lately I’ve been experiencing slow internet speeds, and I’d like to free up all the space I can. My roku tv loads advertisements every time I turn it on to watch netflix or plays games. I’d like to disable these advertisements so that my games and netflix can run more smoothly on an already strained internet connection. I can’t find the setting to disable ads anywhere, but I’m probably just looking in the wrong place. Please help!

You can't. That's one way Roku makes money, by pushing ads to your player. You have no control over that unless you can configure your router to block access to the Roku ad servers. I have no idea how that can be done, and not all routers provide that level of configuration. You just have to live with it.

You can't disable them. That said, they're small image files - a drop in the bucket compared to even low-bandwidth streaming (plus they're typically downloaded once, then used repeatedly). They're not causing your issues.

I don't know if it is going to help your TV (it probably will) but I was able to remove those advertisement images from my 2018 Roku Ultra home screen. I switched to AdGuard DNS on my router. Now I have blank spot with just rectangular border on the right side of my Roku home screen.

Here is article about AdGuard DNS:

P.S.
And I used Family protection IP addresses on my router: 176.103.130.132 and 176.103.130.134 because one day my 10yo daughter was playing some game on her tablet and accidentally tapped pop-up ad and it opened porn site in the browser and she was very upset.

Install Pi-hole on your network. https://pi-hole.net/

I can't say enough good things about this project.  haven't seen a homescreen ad in like a year.

I hate to sound like a shill for ads and my home network is on Openwrt with Adblock installed, so i obviously don't have anything against blocking ads, but i whitelisted Roku because the ads on the homescreen are A) unobtrusive and well done and B) actually show me things i might want, can't even say how many times ive quickly clicked on a channel with just a glance at the ad and immediately regretted it because it looked like something i might be interested in, but i know when i click back the next ad will already be loaded. So yeah, i get it, but you might try allowing those ads for a while and see if you find them useful, you can always just block them again.

I agree. And Roku's home screen ads are about as unobtrusive as you can possibly get. Not to mention that most of us spend very little time on the screen with ads. I choose a channel, then I'm watching content.

You can always sandblast the logo off the back of your iPhone.

Disabling the ads on Roku isn't going to speed up your internet speeds unless you are on something as slow as dialup. If you are experiencing slow speeds, you should contact your ISP and have them check your internet.

You can change the ad source in one of the secret menus. Try one of the staging sources and you'll get an empty space. I didn't leave it for long so it might change to something else over time.

Get rid of Ad's on Roku homescreen

Pay 'Nothing' to anyone! It just involves your time (it took me approx. 15min.).

Reading the posts shared, I myself prefer not to have Ads or Brand names etched or embeded on things I've bought (roku t.v.).
Movie, t.v. and streaming sites etc. offering free content is another thing, as it comes with the territory of being free.

(Every router brand and model is different and you'll have to put in the time to find out how to use these ad-blocking IP's.)
I take no responsibility for your actions upon modding your router.

Use these Alternate DNS addresses in your router settings:
23.253.163.53  &  198.101.242.72

Done!....... Responding to a problem acknowledges and confirms that there is one. While resolving a problem will help all.
