55S401 major audio delay issues...even when using an AVR! What is going on?!

Fri Jan 11, 2019 3:31 pm

This is an issue I’ve been having since November. It’s driven me crazy at this point. My Roku TV introduces 100ms audio delay to PCM and 200ms audio delay to Dolby Digital/DTS, regardless of an Optical or HDMI-ARC connection. I tested out 7-8 separate sound bars and they all had the delay.

Now I even have an AVR with a delay! I don’t know how it’s doing this, given that the AVR is supposed to handle the audio processing now. The Roku TV is connected to the AVR via HDMI and Optical (also tried with just HDMI) and then all sources (Xbox One X, DirecTV, etc) are connected to the AVR via HDMI. They all have a 100ms audio delay, regardless of connection type.

The ONLY thing that has zero delay is the internal Roku TV speakers. I’ve tried every single configuration, setting, connection, etc that I could possibly think of or have been recommended and there is consistently a delay.

This is so far beyond unacceptable and ridiculous. And I’ve done support with Roku for months now to the point where their response is, “We’ll let you know it we ever figure out something that fixes this.”

...Wow.

Doesn't your AVR have an adjustment for audio? Like a lipsynch setting or a manual millisecond adjustment? Mine has it, and I've had to use it for my cable box.
Yeah, I got some Rokus.

It does, but it’s only to ADD a delay from 5-500ms, and I need the delay reduced by about 100ms.

What's the brand and model of the AVR? Is there possibly a firmware upgrade for it?
Yeah, I got some Rokus.

It’s a Pioneer VSX-532. No firmware upgrade that I could find.

I also just grabbed a Denon S540BT. Same delay! Doesn’t make sense because even sources that are only connected to the receiver have the delay, like my Xbox. It doesn’t make sense.

Yeah, if it's happening with both AVRs, I'm not sure you can do anything to fix it.. see if you can get a replacement Roku, because I'd consider this unacceptable.

Agree. Seems like a hardware issue.

What's the actual make/model of the Roku TV?

And note: I know you don't want to hear this, but it's not really a "Roku" issue. It's the TV's manufacturer (e.g. TCL), since it's undoubtedly their processing that's affecting the audio - particularly as you said it happens on other external inputs.

It’s outside of warranty, so they won’t replace it.

It’s a TCL 55S401 Roku TV.

And the thing that I don’t understand is that with an AVR, the TV shouldn’t be doing any processing. As far as I knew, it’s purely hooked up as a screen. So how does it even get a chance to mess up the audio?

Also, for what it’s worth, Roku is who updates the firmware and it was the update in November that really introduced this issue. Everything was great before that.

Here's 132 pages of various audio sync issues with various models - yes... been happening a LONG time. No relief in sight:
https://forums.roku.com/search.php?keywords=audio+sync

DTS/High Def Audio are the usual suspects. Convert to something else - manually. Yep, it's a work around, but a work around that works:

^that's what I use - 'cause it's just too easy.

Yeah, I stand corrected - looks like it's the Roku OS that does the system updating here.  And I see you've been elsewhere looking for answers (AVS, Reddit, etc.). Looks like other Roku TV owners have experienced this issue.

Did you do a factory reset on this TV? Or, did you do the less-intrusive audio/video reset?  Factory and/or Audio-Video TCL Reset

Have you gone "outside the box" in looking for things that seemingly shouldn't affect audio - at least insofar as making it lag video? I'm thinking about turning OFF HDR, for example. HDR shouldn't cause audio to lag, unless it's stealing bandwidth from the additional video signal required. Make sense? I would try stuff like that, just remembering where things were set before you toggled them.

Here's another outside the box example - Roku secret screens. That's where you can use the remote keys in various sequences to bring up secret Roku screens.  There's one, for example, that toggles "Audience Listening" as well as private audio via the headphones in the Roku remote concurrently. Again, should that affect audio lag outbound via HDMI or Optical? No, but it is part of the audio functionality.

Here's where you can find that sequence, as well as other Secret Screens:  Roku Secret Screens

How about toggling CEC functionality on/off on the Roku TV (in Roku Settings)?

These are all things I would play around with when normal audio-only settings don't help.

I’m having this issue when watching live TV or Netflix or playing video games or things like that, so converting audio isn’t really something that I can do. :-/

Yeah, I’ve definitely done a full factory reset. That was a huge pain but it didn’t change anything. HDR is disabled, I don’t like how dark it makes everything, anyway. I’ve messed around with the secret screens and with CEC and nothing has made any difference.

The part that I really don’t understand is that I’m even having this issue with an AVR. I don’t understand how that can be. Two different AVRs, same 100ms lag. Maybe the TV is still somehow finding a way to do some audio processing despite the AVR? I just don’t understand that part at all.

Roger that...
Well, I'm sure a whole bunch of people are just as mystified as you are (judging by the sheer number of posts and users shouting for help). After reading about these issues for... years... there doesn't seem to be any real solution. Factory resets annoy - they do not cure.
