1. I was never able to get the .xml method to work with my ReadyNAS Duo. Try deleting the .xml file entries in configuration, and see if that works.

2. Roksbox is free for the first month, presumably so you can test it out and work out all the kinks, as people are doing in this thread. After that it's $15 ($10 until October, for life, I think). It takes some doing to get it working properly (with the variety of codecs and servers and operating systems it's hard to imagine it ever being plug and play), but once you do, it's amazing. I am streaming home movies and photos from a NAS drive, and just retired a TiVo and bought my third Roku as a result of this great software. (There are a couple of other channels that do the same thing as Roksbox, too).

I think I've found the missing piece of the configuration for the ReadyNAS users; you have to set the "Redirect default web access to this share" option to point to the media share. Otherwise, it'll prompt for credentials whenever you connect to the media folder, which Roksbox doesn't handle.

"Unexpected" Error for some videos

Thu Sep 16, 2010 6:11 pm

I have been using roksbox successfully for a month or two now to watch recordings that my computer makes using BeyondTV, which it then converts to mp4 h.264 files. I never had a problem playing one of those files until last week when I got two recordings that would give me the "An unexpected problem (but not server timeout or HTTP error) has been detected" message any time I tried to play them. A subsequent recording played just fine but then two more recordings this week are giving me this message again and one more after that appears to play correctly.

I am using a manually created XML file that I update each day with a vbscript, but I checked, and there is nothing different about the filename or any other parameters for the shows that won't play than from the dozens that have worked just fine.

I am able to browse to the XML file from another computer on my network, and I am able to play the files by entering their full URL's into a browser on another computer on the network.

This would seem to indicate that the problem must either be in the recordings themselves (in which case, I am left to figure out why it just started happening and why it's sporadic) or in the roksbox code or in the underlying Roku functionality it uses. My recordings are made from over-the-air broadcast channels, so they skip occasionally, and while this had not caused problems up to now, I wonder whether my recordings could be getting "rejected" if they are too skippy (although I haven't noticed the offending videos to be any worse than usual). Is there any debugging I could do to get a more verbose explanation of what is going wrong?

Thanks!

I would try re-encoding one of the files and if it then plays, I would conclude that it was a problem with the encode.

Good idea. I just tried it but the same thing happened.

Did you re-encode the video with a different encoding program? What are your settings? You should be encoding the video with the h.264 codec at or below 3.5mbs

I am using BeyondTV's ShowSqueeze functionality to compress to 3160 Kbps with h.264. When I tried to redo one just now, I used 2692 Kbps, but like I said that didn't affect it.

I am not familiar with "BeyondTV's ShowSqueeze". Can you try re-encoding the encoded video using something else? Like I know this one works well

Probably not the issue, but: I found that some but not all of my ripped DVD's (encoded at 2.5mbs) would not stream; when I switched to a forced bitrate of 3500 on the roku (instead of Auto) the same files played perfectly.

Do you like this better than HandBrake?

Hey new paid and registered user here. Just wanted to point out that the Roksbox.com tutorial may need to be updated regarding Mongoose. Seems that now instead of an installation pack, you get a single executable file. Wherever you place this file and run it from, that's the root directory for the web server. Quick and easy, once I figured that out, and why it was deviating from the instructions on the Roksbox tutorial. http://roksbox.com/home/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=53&Itemid=54

What is the business model come October? Will this be a monthly paid plan, or still a one time purchase?

Thanks for helping make Roku a very viable alternative to upcoming Boxee and others.

No, but it is simpler. He could use handbrake, but I am not sure how comfortable he is with this kind of thing so I just wanted to point him to one that is fairly simple, but that I know works well.

Well I just tried re-encoding one with Handbrake because I already had that installed on my computer, and it plays (although the quality seems poorer :( ). I guess I could learn the CLI commands to automate encoding all my recordings with Handbrake instead of BeyondTV, but it still seems very odd that the method I was using to encode for several weeks suddenly went from a 0% failure rate to an 80% failure rate with no changes anywhere in the picture.

So does the "unexpected problem" basically mean the Roku just rejected the file that roksbox served up and there's no more information available? I wonder whether there's some external way to test whether a file would play on the Roku that might give an explanation of what it finds wrong with a file...

Error trying to view YouTube RSS feeds (videoqueue.xml)

Fri Sep 17, 2010 7:34 pm

Hello,

I installed Roksbox today, followed the instructions to change my READYNAS to http server mode, configured Roksbox, and am now able to access my photos, videos, and music. (I am not using XML files for these - just the directory structure.) Photos, music, and videos all work great so far!

The problem I am having is using the "videoqueue.xml" file to allow me to watch youTube videos. I have been following the instructions at http://roksbox.wikispaces.com/YouTube
and have been create the code for the various RSS feeds using the RSS service at http://www.referd.info/

My "videoqueue.xml" file contains 14 RSS feeds: one of my uploaded videos, one of my wife's uploaded videos, one of my youtube favorites, and ten to my youtube account's "playlists." (I had so many youtube favorites that I use the "playlists" feature as a sort of folder structure to sort them by subject.) I also left in a few of the videos and RSS feeds from the example file.

SYMPTOM:
- When I select Videos, it says "found youtube XML file" and proceeds to load and display the videos on my READYNAS.
- When I shift over from my local videos to the Youtube selection I see two choices: "youtube RSS feeds" and "Youtube"
- When I choose "youtube RSS feeds" it says "loading XML file..." or something to that effect - then the roku player hangs up for a moment then boots me back out to the channels page. I have to re-enter Roksbox. I assume that means my XML file is crashing Roksbox.

Here is the text of my XML file. Since I've never used XML before, maybe there is some sort of basic coding error I have made in the structure of the file? Or is a maximum length to the XML file, which I've exceeded?

What can I do to my XML file to make it work, and allow me to view my youtube videos? Thanks in advance for your help.

You can't use a naked ampersand character in xml. You must escape it as &

[i.e. use the FIVE characters '&' 'a' 'm' 'p' ';' instead of just '&']

Same would go for double quote => " single quote => ' and the less-than and greater-than signs (< >) if you wanted to use them.
